NYC/LI used to have "coal gas", made by locally (per county) baking coal in ovens at a plant. Oil was far far cheaper than coal gas. Coal gas only made sense for cooking and lighting, never heating. Eventually high pressure nat gas pipelines were built to NYC and nat gas is same or lower cost per BTU vs oil.
