What's Sonia Sotomayor's racial background?

Unlike most Puerto Ricans, she's not visibly mulatto. I'm guessing that a DNA test would show her ancestry to be at least 90% to 95% European. While there's something Asian-looking about her, that's probably just happenstance; Seth MacFarlane is also vaguely Asian-appearing but has no known Asian ancestry.

As Sotomayor's confirmation hearings approach, and the racial angle gets more and more attention, it's important to determine whether she actually is a minority and whether she actually did face discrimination in her past.

It puzzles me why the American media treat Hispanics and Latinos as a different race from Europeans.

When I have visited Spain, and when I have had Spanish coworkers, they were obviously European. But perhaps Spaniards are a different race from Hispanics!

Because it benefits Latinos to be labelled a discriminated against minority.

Most Hispanic/Latino people in the United States are visibly nonwhite. Mexicans are by far the single largest group, and they are overwhelmingly mestizo or Indio, as indeed are most people from Central and South America. Caribbean Hispanics - Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans - are primarily mulatto with a non-insignificant number of more or less pure blacks, especially among the Dominicans.

Aside from the fact that it's silly to lump people from such diverse backgrounds into a single race, it makes little sense to include people of full European background like your Spanish coworkers or Patty Barreiro in the nonwhite category at all, just on account of the language they speak.

There's racism within latino countries tied to the shade of your skin. The darker you are, the worse you've generally been treated over the years.

The absurdity of racial identity classifications (didn't Hitler and the Nazis begin it?) is that, according to the government, a Dominican and a Hatian might be considered two different races where the only difference between the two is language and geography.

My mother's family emigrated from Sicily in the 1890s. They were of course Italians but with a Spanish surname as many Sicilans have. Some of my other maternal Italian ancestors had names like Morales.

Does this make me of 75% Italian and 25% Hispanic background? Or would I be considered of 100% Italian background. See how ridiculous this can get.

Puetro Ricans however, and we have a lot around here, look darker though, and I don't know where they originate. Or maybe they've just been there for more generations than anyone in Curibata.
I think Mexico City is the same way, but I don't know the population percentage wise, except they used to have the largest hebrew school on earth once upon a time. If someone mentions that Mexicans all look Mexican, that's because they're seeing all the ones who left a few states. None(or most I should say) of these people fled from Mexico City.

The term Hispanic or Latino would baffle me, but then I realize we have another rediculous term. White.

What you should be amazed at, is that such a racist and radical should be rewarded with a for life job.

How is that important? The 14th Amendment rules here, not European Union-style "hate crime" laws.

It's more important that she intends to uphold the oath of office:
"I, Sonia Maria Sotomayor, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, under the Constitution and laws of the United States. Well, the PLAYERS are black of course, but not the man on the street. Glad you brought that up though. The reason Brazil dominates in soccer is because blacks participate in soccer, while here in America, they don't. If they did, we'd be much stronger on the world stage.

In Mexico, the fans sometimes make animal sounds at black wrestlers or boxers(especially black vs. Mexican).

Being an animal in sports is not a negative anyway.

Descendants of colonial settlers
Brazil's racial base are its colonial settlers (Amerindians, Portuguese and Africans):
* At least 50% of the Brazilian paternal ancestry is of Portuguese origin.[19]
* 86% of Brazilians have over 10% of their genes coming from Africans.[20]

There are many non-affluent Asians, especially among first-generation immigrants with limited English skills, but by and large Asians are "punching above their weight" in many fields such as science, engineering and IT. There are many theories why this is so, involving everything from the nature of many Asian languages to the demands of rice farming. I.Q. is sometimes mentioned but is probably not the reason. Asian I.Q. scores are no more that two or three points higher than the American average of 100, not nearly enough to account for Asian dominance in, for example, biochemistry.

Soccer seems to be a sport where there are no particular racial advantages. One well-documented racial difference relevant to athletic performance is that blacks of West African descent, who account for most blacks in the Western Hemisphere, have proportionately more fast-twitch muscle fibers than people from other areas. That often translates into better explosive power, which is an advantage in many sports. It may, in part, account for black dominance of the NFL and NBA. It is less directly relevant to soccer, however, and as a result soccer is truly a world sport in terms of the backgrounds of top players.

LOL. It's not racist. It's bigoted or prejudiced at most, and I'll dispute that. Blacks have done well for Brazil. Just like blacks have done well in basketball and football in America.

Ronaldinho is black. Remove black players from the picture, and Brazil would not have so many World Cups.

Even Kobe has said that if blacks were more involved in soccer in the US, things would be different. He grew up playing soccer in Italy.

Ronaldinho is black.

He's obviously both black and white. And Kaka is probably their best player now.

Lots of Asians from Southeast Asia and the Philippines aren't doing all that much. The Cambodian neighborhood in Long Beach is basically a ghetto.
Asians are dominating in schools. The percentage of Asians at UC schools is pretty amazing.

There seems to be a fairly large achievement gap in America between Northeast Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans) and Southeast Asians (such as Vietnamese and Cambodians.) Pacific Islanders such as Samoans and Native Hawaiians are even worse off, but although included with Asians for statistical purposes they're quite different from a racial standpoint.

Interestingly the same thing is happening now. I see more Italian-Puerto Rican couples. 60 years ago Italian-Irish couples were the new thing. That's the nature of America, ethnic differences mean less and less.

Actually, some Italians here in Tampa were considered "Latino" but not "Hispanic".

Italians are the original Latins anyway.

The reason Brazil dominates in soccer is because blacks participate in soccer, while here in America, they don't. If they did, we'd be much stronger on the world stage.

Bullshit.
The rate of black participation in US soccer exceeds their % of the population. Out of 11 starters, the US National Team generally has at least 2-3 blacks. Confederations Cup is coming up in a few weeks. Watch a few games. In group play they will be playing Italy in the opener, then Brazil and Egypt.
From the 2006 World Cup 23-man roster alone you had Eddie Pope, Tim Howard, DeMarcus Beasley, Oguchi Onyewu and Eddie Johnson.

The 2002 World Cup starters had 3 1/2 black starters. (Earnie stewart is bi-racial)

Indeed, Germany is one of the dominant soccer powers and has zero black players.
