It puzzles me why the American media treat Hispanics and Latinos as a different race from Europeans.When I have visited Spain, and when I have had Spanish coworkers, they were obviously European. But perhaps Spaniards are a different race from Hispanics! Most Hispanic/Latino people in the United States are visibly nonwhite. Mexicans are by far the single largest group, and they are overwhelmingly mestizo or Indio, as indeed are most people from Central and South America. Caribbean Hispanics - Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans - are primarily mulatto with a non-insignificant number of more or less pure blacks, especially among the Dominicans. Aside from the fact that it's silly to lump people from such diverse backgrounds into a single race, it makes little sense to include people of full European background like your Spanish coworkers or Patty Barreiro in the nonwhite category at all, just on account of the language they speak.
