I know of frame fatiue as well, but it is not a problem on rigid subway cars, only the bolster areas. A well designed, balanced frame and structure will have minimal fatigue effects, and wear will be concentrated on replaceable parts like wheels and axles. You gotta think more.Guy, i like both systems too. I do not obsess over PATH. It should be expanded, yes, particularly in new jersey. Oh, and guy, mark my words, one day, i WILL call the shots on the PATH system, and even on the MTA system, and i will provide the greatest transit services ever, on good rolling stock with good comforts and all. I will also build new, and EXCELLENT transit systems, and help education and healthcare along the way, as well as protect mother nature. I will do all of this once i get "some grips on some reins", my particular plans to get some grips are secret, because i don't want to blow it, but i will do it. I remember you saying you survived the cancers, but i was wondering what you eat, you don't have to answer though. Maybe i did ask too personal of a question. All i have to say is if you eat healthy foods, people generally ARE healthier. You say you have a sinus infection? FOR THREE WEEKS!!!? Sometimes medications can make it worse. I have also experienced the pains within the head from the sinus pressures. I never used the medications, those are for colds. Usually you have to blow your nose a lot, and eat healthy for a while, and drink lots of warm tea with frozen raspberries in there. Never drink too hot of a tea though. The best time to blow your nose is after a hot shower or bath. Sometimes those infections can give you bad breath too :(, and even you are aware of it, until you empty your sinuses.Oh, and this may or may not be helpful, i found that after making onself do some physical activities, it helps clear the sinuses. Guess it gives good blood flow or something. Some doctors might disagree with me though. I would suggest asking a doctor, i don't want to give bad advice, but some doctors just give the old nonsense of pumping you with antibiotics when not necessary. |

No, i won't do that, once they are reefed, they are reefed. The time has come for some of those 40s, and 42s, after years of neglect, but some can still be rebuilt to prime vehicles. I will convert the NTTs to SMEE braking, and re-enforce their frames. Give them better seats and all. The BMT stock will get Arnine type seating arrangement. I will put some redbirds back in service when needed, and i will keep most of the PATH PA cars, and i might even test them on the IRT to see how they will ride, and if they are better than the NTTs. I will rebuild the R32s and some R38s to have a better ride, better soundproofing, and better performance. I won't be a butt-head to the NTTs, i won't just scrap their bodies, i will rebuild them to be proper subway cars. |

If necessary, i will convert them to DC motors. It won't be so simple to do, but in the long run there will be a cost benefit.I am also contemplating wether or not i should abandon the resistor grids for DC chopper control. It won't be SMEE in the sense that we know it, with resistor grids and all, but it will be a simple, and robust system. Probably will stick with regular SMEE with resistor grids. |

"i am thinking of a SMEE type system which works with AC motors, rather than DC"There was a train of R38's which had Alternating Current (which does not have these motors anymore). It was the R-38 GEC Alsthom (GATI) Test train The car numbers were 4040 4041 4042 4043 4044 4045 4046 4047. This train could NOT be mixed with any other equipment. Also, there was a REGEN circuit breaker added in the cabs, and what that did was it allowed energy to be returned back into the third rail. If you can somehow do this to other SMEE equipment, I would be impressed. |

That is interesting info there, thanks. Any photos or web pages of these machines? What year was this done in? Where did you learn of these machines? That train in question probably didn't have the SMEE system, it probably had its system completely swapped out for the new propulsion system. That is probably the only way to do it though. |

Well, those R38's looked exactly the same like any other R38. This was done sometime in 1999. I learned them from general knowledge, Train Dude would know more about this. That train did have SMEE braking, but it was different. A few things you would notice when riding this train was, 1) The transition from power to coast to braking will be smoother. 2) A slight delay will be felt when moving the Master Controller from Power to Coast. This is a result of the power being gradually reduced, rather then it being cut off immediately. 3) This A/C propulsion would make a whining noise that changes frequently as the speed changes. 4) And the Ammeter in the cab would not be operable. |

Did it have softer suspension or different trucks? Or did they just swap out the DC motors for AC motors and change controls? If the braking was indeed SMEE, then the reason they couldn't be coupled to other cars was due to the different power control system, i guess. |

That's not a good reason to replace any "vehicle" of any type. The look represent being run down as in needing re-building or replacing. In my little opinon, I still stand by my remarks. The cras look dated. That doesn't mean I hate you or your choice of whatever. What is your favorite? I love all subways and if I had the time and money I'd travel to see the sights AND ride the trains. Bottom line, the cars in question are being used and until they are replaced or whatever, that's the way they'll remain. One last last little peep. My wife and I recently traded her 1992 Saturn SL2. The headliner had been falling, the a/c didn't work and it leaked horribly when it rained. But, for the initial 500 bux we invested, the beast drove well for over 3 years. When the time came for it to go, there was no hesitation. When equipment has failed you've got to decide whether to press on or give up. |

I see you failed to be specific and instead resorted to immature rhetoric. If you don't like being asked questions when you come out with statements that beg questions (especially fair questions that have no malice in them whatsoever), then refrain from posting such statements."Unattractive interiors"? Great, then throw out cars that are a mere 22 years old on that basis (the PA-4s)? Please don't claim that such a response is either grown-up or kind. I wasn't aware that designing "experimental cars" (which is a financial risk) is a sign of viability for a company? Besides, on what basis is the PA-1 judged non-experimental when compared with the "black cars" or K-cars? PA-1 and PA-2 are remarkable successes, if their 42- to 43-year lifespan is any judge of same. Your unrelated call to bring back the 3rd Avenue El I am in sympathy with, at least. |

What is it with this PATH onsession? Is something in the water fountains of PATH stations? My goodness, stop taking serious pills. |

If you like what you like, like it. I like what I like. see how inane it all is? You want to argue about the condition of a train? It is what it is. |

The black cars cool too, and were known as B-models and D-models, the latter being the ones with porthole windows for the newark run.PA-1s are astounding, 43 years old, and still have SMOOTH operation. In my opinion, the *BEST* thing the PA can do with the relatively new PA cars is convert them to B units with no cabs and fit them with AC propulsion, then they won't need any CBTC since they aren't cab units. They are also kawasaki cars and look similar to the new PA-5s at their B end. Really though, even the oldest cars don't really feel old when riding in them, and their HVAC usually works too. I really don't see why the PA is going to scrap all these cars which are still good, in particular the PA4s. Shows they just got an extra cool 80 million dollars lying around or so, and provide junk service on weekends, and poor midday service, and still have the audacity to raise fares, and don't improve service. They do not behave like a company with financial problems, they just make excuses to fill their assholes, which are already filled with their brains, with some more bananas. Really, even the PA1s should stay around. The thing is that these cars are STURDY, and even have heavy end-posts and frames, and the fact that the distance between bolsters is relatively short minimizes flexing and the such. |

I do not like the PATH as you may think, I just like the H&M railroad, which is currently being run by a company with chit for brains. They are beginning to behave like the MTA. |
