Tell me precisely where the noise was coming from. If it is from around the door area, then the sound has to do with the door, wither trolley, or gear, or something of that sort. The worst case scenario is that there is a loose bolt at the corner, or a rivet, or maybe weld(unlikely), that causes rubbing between two plates as the car sways from side to side when moving, or when someone walks there. Plus it is the roof, lots of maintanence work goes into the fans, and maybe something was left loose after they did the work, or the sound is ventillation related. If the sqeaking is coming from the roof, then there is no big problem, even if it *IS* a loose bolt or something. The structural integrity isn't affected.
I have even noticed some loose screws on PATH cars around the ventilation and end areas on the ceiling. Sometimes these either rattle, or cause squeaking. I have personally tightenned these screws when i came across them, and the rattling and sqeaking stopped. Heh, in a sense, i too have worked on railcars. Never realized that, but i *have* worked on the PATH cars. Good thing i realized this, now i have some crudentials which people here talk ask about.
