Yes, I've heard about the girder that was embedded in the building. But in 1989, without access to (and barely existence of...) the internet and being unfamiliar with the area, I had no knowledge of it then.

As I mentioned in several posts on this subject, When I first rode the Fkln Shtl circa 1959, not only was the structure still in place, but the rails and ties were still there for the entire length of the remaining structure. The next time I rode it which would have been about a year later the rails and ties had been removed and only the steelwork of the structure remained. I wonder if there are any photos around of the structure with rails and ties as I first saw it.

The pillar structure was inside a building being demolished on the northeast corner of Lexington and Grand Aves. Photos of it were posted here, years ago.

Ashland Place was doomed by Hylan's opposition and the BRT bankruptcy. The reorganized BMT did not want to spend money ($8 million) to buy 200 additional steel subway cars, needed for Fulton St service. In addition, , the line would have to be rebuilt from Utica Ave to Ashland Pl, and from Atlantic Ave to beyond Grant Ave.

After the Fulton St el shut down in 1940, the trackways were partially covered over so that passengers going the the Manhattan bound IND wouldn’t have to either cross Fulton St or use the overpass. Exactly how long after the Fulton St el was shut down the trackways were covered over I don’t know.

There were times that the Franklin trains ran through as Brighton lcls so it wasn't too much of a stretch. Although I never used it, the S/E of the S/B platform at Rockaway Ave was laid out almost identically to the S/E of Fkln since when the Fulton St el was shut down west of Rockaway Av, machines were installed similar to those at Fkln to issue transfers to passengers needing to connect to the Fulton St el.

I'll see and raise. Riding the J train thru Brooklyn in the early 80s around midnight. I knew the deal on what to expect on that line at that time of the night, so I sat in the car with the conductor. My fears were confirmed when the conductor locked himself in his cab!

It took quite some times for things to improve. Riding the RFW on a J in 1998 or 1999 shortly after dusk, I wondered why there was relatively little light coming up from street level between Myrtle and Broadway Junction. I finally realized it was because there weren't many open businesses along Broadway, and many abandoned buildings, even after 20+ years a legacy of the 1977 riots.

It would have been interesting if the Fulton El survived. They could have put the switches to the Brighton line back in for partial service (specials, alternate routing, etc.). Plus, Atlantic Ave and Bway Junction would've been hopping even more than now, and Atlantic would not have been cut down! However, the non-existence of the Fulton St. subway would be a pretty high price, and the congestion at DeKalb would be a pretty severe bottleneck for southern Brooklyn service. It might even have resulted in another south Brooklyn route being "taken" by an IND connection, or even the Fulton el itself.

My aunt lived on Stone Avenue off Broadway and worked in Cedarhurst. Things were so bad that after the riot on her way from work, when she got off of the N31/N32 in Far Rockaway she would have to stop at Waldbaums to do her grocery shopping then haul all of those packages up the stairs to the A train for the ride back to Brooklyn.

I believe you because in the fall of '98 I worked in Bushwick on Schaefer Street and I would stroll over to Broadway and marveled at how there were abandoned stores and the like and assumed it was a remnant of 1977.

Oh, I see that. But from what I'm reading here (never went there myself to see it), this signage lasted into the 1990s, while I think the last Brighton-Franklin train ran in 1963.

Outside of MTA-land, it would be considered unusual for signage to last 30+ years beyond its accuracy. I also know that the 111th St. Station on the 7 had signs talking about the Second Avenue El until 1989- the Daily News published a picture and had a small article. And I did personally in 1999 see the mosaics at 65th Street mezzanine (R train) advertising Rockaway service...so I guess 30 years of obsolescence isn't so bad.

I'll try and find the article I saw it in- I think it may be inside a photo album at my parents' house in Florida- so I may not be able to locate it until February.

I don't think it's quite the same picture. In the pic you've provided, it looks like the reference to the Second Ave El had been painted over- but the paint wore off. The pic I think I remember, although black and white, the SAEL reference was not even partially obscured. I think a few graffiti stickers were affixed, but that's it. Also, I remember the lettering not being slanted/Italicized.

But it's been years since I've seen it.

I haven’t been up to the Bronx in several years but into at least the 1960s, I recall seeing similar signs on the Jerome ave Line which in addition to displaying info about the Lex Exp also included info about trains to Manhattan via 6th and 8th Ave elevated.
