Riding the J train thru Brooklyn in the early 80s around midnight. I knew the deal on what to expect on that line at that time of the night, so I sat in the car with the conductor. My fears were confirmed when the conductor locked himself in his cab!It took quite some times for things to improve. Riding the RFW on a J in 1998 or 1999 shortly after dusk, I wondered why there was relatively little light coming up from street level between Myrtle and Broadway Junction. I finally realized it was because there weren't many open businesses along Broadway, and many abandoned buildings, even after 20+ years a legacy of the 1977 riots. |
