Oh absolutely, removal of the els in Manhattan was almost a necessity, and of course, the subways had to be built there for it to be the city it is today. Hands down. The only "mistake" they did was removing the 3rd Ave el before the 2nd Ave subway was built. The 3rd Ave el was removed on the promise of the 2nd Ave subway. If it would have been required to have the 2nd Ave built in order to get rid of the 3rd Ave el, I guarantee we would have had a 2nd Ave subway running already. The push would have been so great to get rid of that el, that somehow they would have gotten the money, as it would have been on the front burner politically.
