They wanted the els off the Manhattan Avenues, and with good reason. The only bad thing that happened is that the 3rd Ave el was removed before the 2nd Ave subway was built. Had it been required to keep the 3rd Ave el until the SAS was built, we would have a subway under 2nd Ave today, as the political pull would have been so great to get that el off of 3rd Ave, that somehow they would have gotten the money to build it. |
