"highway" rapid transit, as in most cases, it's a PITA to get to, as it's not particularly walkable like a neighborhood subway line is. If NYC ever did build such a line, they should look at WMATA's Orange Line segment in I-66 for some ideas. To work, it would have to coincide with a redevelopment program for one or two key locations along the route. That would likely spur similar efforts at other locations, and within a decade of opening, it should have enough regular ridership to make it worthwhile. When I first read about the LIE line, I envisioned a major facelift of the area between Queens Blvd and Flushing Meadow Park, since I knew the line would at least run there. The "me, too!" attitude would have naturally spread along the route. |
