Maybe all the MODers should fill the trip, scare away all the family folks, and then protest for a return of the MOD trips.

Maybe by now the pathological foamers have realized that their obsession has taken a turn away from them, that they may be partially to blame for it, and that they have found other, hopefully more productive and mainstream ways with which to occupy their time.

Maybe by now it could be realized that part of the fun is exploring the destination or the possibilities at any given station and tying it in with the ride rather than engaging in an eight-or-more-hour idiot's delight of being spun around the system without any aim other than the train itself. You've been on a train for an hour; you've been on it for eight hours. The mind can't possibly handle any more than an hour's worth of such a stimulus without it fading into a blur.

Maybe the "hobby" rather than the obsession will be showcased to other generations, and maybe even multiple generations and socioeconomic, racial, and political strata at the same time and serve to mainstream and sanitize what has become a smarmy subculture sometimes rightfully ostracized by the mainstream.

Maybe the photographers who lament not being able to photograph only the train can photograph some scenes including the train, such as a candid shot of a father and son at the railfan window, a group of women of non-railfan interest sitting in the car enjoying the nice sunny summer ride, tourists from Wherever who thought the idea is novel, and chronicle THAT instead of the umpteenth photo of the front of 100 or 1575 without any reference to where it is or what time period in which it's being run.

Maybe I am expecting too much.
