A tip of Unca Selkirk's hat to ya for your accuracy and candor ... for me it's a bit different, I was used to spending 8 or more hours on trains every day, doing the same runs at the same times every day between the same two terminals over and over again. And as much as I would have loved doing a couple of those MOD trips, what I saw on videotape was more than enough to convince me in the wisdom of avoiding them. In my own unique way, I much preferred the whole "subway experience" from a "trainman's" point of view and interest and from the behaviors captured on magnetic oxide as well as the photos of people violating the rules and common sense, I would never have had a chance to be able to take things in the way I would have preferred to - chatting up the crew, spending some time in quiet reflection in the cabs, fondling tools again, and maybe have another peek undercar or watching cuts and adds again up close. I guess we all have our various pecadillos, but the biggest problems I saw was a general lack of respect for the equipment, the people who gave so very much of themselves to make it all happen, and who in the end got skewered and spit upon for all they did. "Back in the day," we were called BUFFS. Some of us even got called "employees" ... but sadly, so much of it from what I saw are indeed "foamers" and some of the "shutterbugs" exhibited far and away the worst behavior of all. :( Damned shame it is ... but I FULLY understand why the MOD things ain't gonna happen again. DAMNED shame. |
