If you look at it pragmatically, mindful of the major differences between politics (MTA) and "private sector where good PR means more sales," it might make some sense. Remember that in the end, the MTA and everything it does reflects upon pussy politicians averse to "bad press." THIS is the prime directive with a state agency - do NOT get a reporter in the governor's face with a question they ain't ready for. All behaviors then within a political subdivision/government agency flows from THIS concept. :(The MOD trips did NOT garner "political capital" for Paturkey. Half the MTA board didn't even know they were ongoing beyond "we're doing some 100th anniversary stuff somewhere." And the lack of politically-controlled "photo op" as a result of the good intents and good nature of the participants who are "employees" resulted in the hornet's nest of political appointees descending on them with questions such as "where did you get the paint and who paid for it?" and "You used OUR cranes and OUR lifts and OUR maintenance bay and parked it WHERE?" Do you know that people got in trouble for taking the receipts, putting it in an envelope to be counter up later without proper "revenue clerk" paperwork? And "how many watts did those cars consume of 'the taxpayer's electrons' for HOW long?" Then there were B division people running on A division territory, vice versa, when any "specials" are C division "picks?" Politicians and their appointees abhor "surprises" and the risk of "bad media exposure." And a number of things that occurred just BEGGED for such really bad kharma for those who so generously gave folks those rides. What IF some moron stepped on an energized third rail? What if the parents of a child who was cursed at by a photog was from Falwell-land and sued for "child abuse?" (yes, in New York "pain and suffering" has some really weird outcomes) The actual causes of "no more MOD trips" may not be known to the fans, but like I said, those "with the show" got beaten up pretty badly for "unauthorized activities." All it takes is ONE mook to complain and the "wrath of Paturkey" is visited upon all ... and there's no functioning mezuzah when you're TWU. Anyone wanna take this up? |
