Park Row & Sands St. - Fare Control Areas

Posted by Express Rider on Wed Oct 14 09:22:35 2020

In photographs, the platform level for both terminals appears to be one level above the street. It's not clear from these photos, whether there is, or can be, room for an existing fare control area, with change booths and turnstyles (earlier years, ticket punchers), at an intermediate level, between the street and the platform.

Does anyone have more information/photos etc. on the interior arrangements at these terminals for fare control areas etc?

From early interior photos and black and white engraved drawings - for Park Row notably, from the Scientific American(?) - it looks like the fare control area at Park Row, was at the rear of the incoming platforms, (reached by stairs from Park Row at street level, adjacent to and immediately east of City Hall park).

But then, IIRC, dont't photos of the Park Row platforms show stairways as well? Do these go to an intermediate level where fare control is? Or do they go to street level? Were Park Row fare controls at street level?

The mid 1930s photos, for Sands St. showing beginning demolition - loop is gone, just a hole in the wall of the station structure. Doesn't look like there's an intermediate level just above the street for fare control facilities. Any more info is greatly welcomed. Thanks to anyone in advance!
