They were gone out of service by the time I got there, but did get to play with gate cars at Branford. The brake handle was on the left, and a good bit higher than later cars. The controllers though were an absolute hoot. Ever been on a good old fashioned Otis freight elevator with the elevator manual controller? Worked exactly the same way! :) Tried to find image of BMT controller, couldn't find it quickly, but it was similar to this:
