I thought the IRT Gate cars turned at 111th...explaining all the tracks that exist there- although they're in use, they're more than is needed for access to/from the Corona Yard.

My mom (she's 87) still remembers riding the Second Avenue El to 111th and switching for the rest of the trip to Main Street, and home. What was interesting is that she did not recall how the train got from the 2nd Ave El to Queens, nor why the trains only ran to 111th.

And even a kid living in Flushing myself in the 1970s, I recall the old signs at the entrances to Main Street indicating that you could get BMT trains there, which Mom explained to me only went as far as Queensborough Plaza... I know now those would've been wood cars...
