If you're going to eliminate the $1 bill then you have to eliminate the $2 bill at the same time or you won't get much savings.

Here in Switzerland, the Franc is reasonably close to the Dollar (0.9:1). We have no bills smaller than 10 Francs. There are coins for 1, 2 and 5 Francs. You never have a wad of bills -- we all know that dreaded situation where you buy something for $2 with a twenty and end up getting 18 ratty dollar bills as change...

Interestingly, there is no coin smaller than 5 rappen (the rough equivalent of a nickel). All store prices are rounded off to the nearest .05, although payments by credit card or by other electronic means are at the .01 base. And like the US, many vending machines do not accept the lowest denomination coin -- so those 5 rappen coins become annoying and tend to accumulate like pennies do in the US.
