Well, it's different for suburban people and urban, as when I lived in the city, I did have to keep the change in my pocket. While I wouldn't start with change, during the course of the day you accumulate it, and you have no choice but to keep it in your pocket. As a suburban person now, my car is almost always with me, so the change usually winds up in the center console of the car as soon as I get back to the car from the store. I never have change in my pocket.
But to get back to urban people, when you get home, most people dump out their pockets, and in the morning you leave with the paper money, and leave whatever change you dumped out he night before in whatever container you throw it in at home.
That's why you need a lot more dollar coins than dollar bills, it would never be an even exchange, as many more dollar coins would be thrown in containers, and next to no one hordes dollar bills in containers, they leave back with the person and get spent.
