They may use them in the same way they use quarters and stuff today.....get them as change, but rarely redistribute them.

That's because coins are worthless. Why bother fishing my pockets for coins if I know I can't afford anything with them? If coins were actually worth something, then taking a bunch of coins out of my pocket I might actually have enough to get something useful. In Canada, you can buy lunch for a not-unreasonable amount of coins. In the US, you can buy a pack of gum with coins.

If coins were never redistributed, then there would probably be lines in front of coinstar machines. To date, I have never seen anyone using them (I am certain they get used though).
