He took an active interest in the entire transit system. Cuomo's arrogance and interference got to be too much. The next MTA head won't be as good as Byford was.

I agree. I believe he was sincere. He also answered his email personally and promptly. Who else did that? The other day I sent one of his subordinates an e-mail with a cc to Byford. Never got an answer from his subordinate, but Byford replied in three minutes.

Last year, someone sent him an email that there was trash piled up under an el for months. He made one phone call, and a truck arrived in 15 minutes to clean it up!

Just enough time spent to strap on that MTA Parachute and then jump. Oddly enough he takes credit for turning the system around while the MDBF continues to drop from where it was 10 years ago. When I left in 2011, the MDBF was just below it's peak of 180,000 miles in 2009. Now it's down to 120,000 miles (a 33% drop) while the average age of the fleet went from 20-24 years (a 20% increase) but still within the expected 35-40 year lifespan of a subway car. So have a good jump, Andy. You did your best.

re: ...[Byford] launched the redesign of every borough bus network.

I found this to be a very impressive goal. The surface system; bus routes, are so very complicated (at least to me anyway). They must serve and cover all neighborhoods near, and most importantly far, from the subway system. Planning new routes or redesigning a part of, or all of the bus network needs to take into consideration best access to various streets, main and smaller ones; safe stopping points for passengers' access, as above thorough as possible coverage of neigborhoods not near transit, and most importantly traffic, mid day evening and rush hour.

But Cuomo was really micromanaging like bypassing the MTA and dictating his misguided LGA plan.

And time will only tell if he made the correct decision regarding the L train. If his solution is really a long term one or one that we will eventually regret. Of course he will be out of office by the time we learn if he was correct.

The real problem is, you have a Governor IMO more concerned with getting the elusive fourth term his father failed to get to me because of both Newt Gingrich's "Contract For America" and the 1994 Baseball Strike that led to a lot of older people in NYC proper openly admitting they voted for George Pataki to get back at Clinton for not issuing an Executive Order to force the 1994 season to be played out in its entirety (this is something I wrote last August on why that strike had to happen and in that I do note the part of the strike affecting the Governor's race in '94).

That may be why Cuomo is as he is, knowing he can do the one thing his father was unable to IMO due to circumstances beyond his control.

Under another Governor, I doubt Byford resigns so easily.

I still believe Cuomo did that because he was concerned doing it as originally planned would have made it in his mind impossible to be elected in 2020 (not that it mattered as it turned out) because of concerns of worse traffic conditions in areas north and south of 14th street caused by New Jersey commuters refusing to or unable to give up their cars causing massive traffic problems in and around the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels made worse by those unable to get to Manhattan other than the (L) or driving. I'm sure Cuomo felt it would have cost him votes in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and to a lesser extent Pennsylvania and that I still think was his driving force at the time.

Not a conspiracy:

There were many in NYC proper, especially those older who openly admitted they voted for Pataki to get back to Clinton for not issuing an Executive Order to force the 1994 Baseball season to be played out in full. For many of them, that 1994 season was looked at as possibly the last opportunity to see the Yankees make the World Series (and in fact, some of them did pass away before the Yankees finally did win it all two years later). Some also were PO'ed at Clinton for not doing it because to them it was their best chance for "Donnie Baseball" (Don Mattingly) to make it to a World Series after enduring the worst down period for the Yankees from 1982-'93 since the infamous 1965-'75 period that includes what is still the last losing season the Yankees have had in 1992. Mattingly would get to the postseason a year later in the strike-shortened 1995 season but his back gave out and he was forced to retire before the Yanks won it all the next year (the Yankees had the best record in the American League when the 1994 strike happened).

That is why this is NOT a conspiracy.

For more than 30 years the MTA insisted that redesigning even one borough bus network wasn’t feasible. They insisted “comprehensive studies don’t work” after several failed attempts in the 1980s.

Right, but I was laying the groundwork as to WHY Cuomo is likely the way he is.

Apparently, his father losing a bid for a fourth term in 1994 has driven the current Governor ever since.

You don't seem to realize to a lot of older generations, BASEBALL is STILL king even if the NFL is the 800-pound gorilla of sports:

Especially in 1994 and given that would have at the time been the first time the Yankees would have been in the postseason since the strike-shortened 1981 season, there were a lot of people PO'ed at Clinton for not issuing an Executive Order forcing that season to be played out in its entirety even if it forced the NFL to move back their schedule to accommodate a delayed finish to the MLB season. As said, people in NYC openly admitted they voted for Pataki to get back to Clinton for not doing that and that while not the sole reason did play a big part in why the elder Cuomo lost. That in turn is why IMO the current Governor is as he is.

Is it, or is it the fact that Pataki was able to draw in the upstate vote?

Is it the fact that Tom Golisano drew in 4% of the vote?

Or the dissatisfaction in Cuomo's stance on capital punishment?

After several failed attempts and comprehensive studies?

The latter hopefully would have had reliable data (unless the studies were either so badly planned out* or underfunded). And shouldn't someone there have had relevant surface transit planning experience and or a masters in public transportation with a concentration in surface transit planning**?
Something sounds very wrong with the MTA.

*retired Bungalow Bar drivers might done a more reliable job studying streets and routes, if that was the problem.

**although from what I've seen posted here, it sounds as though degrees don't necessarily mean any competence at the agency.

degrees are nice. so is long experience in the trenches. NEITHER gurasntees perfect comprehension of every issue. There is always more to be learnt.
Cuomo maybe a competent pol; a transit expert he is not.
While forcing SAS to actually get something finished was very good PR, that in no way makes up for the wasted/stolen billions on either SAS or ESA both of which should be done and already in service for a decade or more at half or less than has been spent. If he were serious, he would put his energy intoreducing the graft and featherbedding in these projects, but, that might cost him his political future.

They insisted “comprehensive studies don’t work” after several failed attempts in the 1980s.

The only thing that experience proved was that "they" were not capable of redesigning the network. They did not prove that a complete redesign wasn't feasible or beneficial.

What was the MDBF when Byford took over? Wouldn't that be a more appropriate starting point than your retirement?

Either way, that's only one metric and for someone that maintains and repairs cars, it's the most important. For the head of the agency, metrics surrounding overall performance and safety are most important. Are trains running on time? Are stations falling down on riders heads? Those metrics have drastically improved.

I am both sad and pissed off at the same time. Byford was THE best president NYCT ever had. King Cuomo's second guessing drove him out in October (first stone thrown with the L project), Byford constantly getting good press, and Byford's profile on 60 minutes made "Train Daddy" a rock star which was damaging to the king's ego.

In NY Byford had more layers of bosses than he would have in any other city. Great leaders don't need that. Finally with the MTA reorganization plan, which hires 3 more 6 figure bosses and relegates the agency presidents to being in charge of day to day operations only, is not the job Byford signed up for.

I wish Andy nothing but the best in the future.
