2390-1-2 did run in regular service on the LL (Lousy Local) although the remainder of the unrebuilt Standards (except for that set and 2204 which somehow wound up with an Arnine truck on one end) had been long since scrapped.

Have museum cars run in REGULAR (not fantrips, not special occasions, not holiday specials) since the 60s?

All three sets of the original museum equipment, B's, Q's and Lo-V's did return to regular service at some point. 2390-1-2 and 1622 when back into regular service almost immediately. The Lo-V's remained laid up until about spring of 1968 when there were pressed into service on the 3rd Avenue El. They remained there until November, 1969.

I vividly remember how the motorman would goose a Brooklyn-bound train before bottoming out in that tunnel, trying to build up a full head of steam. The gears would get to G# above middle C, then the gear pitch would slowly start to drop as the train labored uphill. More often than not, it would drop all the way to B below middle C by the time we'd reach Bedford Ave.

An 8 car train of museum R-1/9s operated regularly in the AMs in 1970 & 71 on the QB often signed up “!/Brighton Local.” In normal practice, AM QBs ran light back to CIYd unless needed for N service. When I was working 57/7, I got permission from Don Harold to run the museum R-9s if needed as long as they did not go on the West End and suffer the wrath of New Utrecht high school students. Many times that museum R-9 QB would return to Stillwell as a 4/Sea Beach Exp.

Up until 1966 when the TWU contract made the TA provide all required uniforms, M/M were required to wear pin striped overalls. There was also another type of stripe called “hickory stripe” which is a slightly wider stripe and was worn more by IRT M/M than the finer pin stripe which was a actually the preferred stripe. I can’t seem to find the pin stripe overalls any more but there are plenty of the hickory stripe overalls and matching jackets available. The matching jackets referred to as jumpers were also required as well as blue shirts (usually work shirts) and dark blue ties. After the 1966 contract provision, only C/Rs and bus operators received uniforms but M/M did not and for several years a lot of M/M just wore street clothes like the engineers on the NYC and LIRR. I’m not sure when it took place, but some time in either the late 1970s or 1980s the MTA started issuing M/M pinstriped overalls as uniforms until it was decided to have the T/Os wear the current blue C/R style trousers and black and white striped shirts. Even though it wasn’t required by the time I became a M/M I often wore the striped overalls anyhow. During the summer, M/M often wore what amounted to as pinstriped jeans which were a little cooler in summer months and were also permitted during the winter usually accompanied by the jumper. In lieu of the pinstriped jeans, M/M also wore ordinary blue pinstriped summer weight pants which I also did on occasion and they were acceptable as well. Of course during the summer months, removal of the tie was also permitted for both M/M and C/Rs.

Hi. I remember this very clearly. In the late spring or early summer of 2001, I noticed a bunch of old cars parked on the SBK cut in between the expressway and 4th Avenue. From the highway, I could see they were painted in work yellow, but that was about it.

I noticed they seemed to be there for a number of weeks, so one Sunday, I went over there, and I saw that they were Qs. While I suspect now and then that 95 (or so...) year old wooden cars wouldn't be in great shape, it was obvious that even a few weeks in an unprotected spot had led to some serious vandalism, and if there'd been any chance of saving them when they were first put there, by mid-July there was none.

They disappeared entirely by the awful autumn of that year.

The issuance of the uniforms to train operators happened after 1985 which is the year my father retired as a motorman. Although he favored the pinstripes (don't recall which type) he also had navy blue overalls which he wore sometimes. He used to buy his overalls at a store on the corner of 124th St. and Lexington Avenue.

However there is precedent for changing the term “motorman” to "operator.” Back when streetcars had C/Rs, the person who actually operated the car was the motorman. After C/Rs were eliminated from streetcars, the NYCTS changed the title to “surface lines operator” since the former M/M now had additional duties besides starting and stopping the car. That would be the logic behind using the term “operator” even though I myself personally prefer the term “Motorman!"

I don’t know if it has changed since I asked several yards ago but I was told that CTA M/M were given a uniform allowance that could only be used to purchase dark blue uniform trousers but they were permitted to wear striped overalls which had to be purchased with their own money. From personal observation, the CTA M/M preferred the striped overalls which from what I saw were the hickory stripe rather than the narrower pin stripe.

I purchased on my own Osh Kosh stripes. Then they were discontinued. Then I purchased and wore Pointer Brand. After 1988, CTA did not allow motormen to no longer wear the stripes. A grievance was filed by a now retired, and personal friend of mine motorman saying that we can wear our traditional uniforms because of a paragraph that was inserted in Amalgamated Transit Union 308's contract that was never removed. The arbitrator ruled that we can wear our stripes, but they may not be used from our uniform allowance. In other words we bought them out of our own pocket. In 1998, CTA started allowing motormen to purchase stripes and were made available at the uniform store.

Sorry I missed this. I was around in July of 1965 but I was five months old and my parents didn't take me to the World's Fair.

Interesting. Which type of stripes were more common on CTA, the hickory stripe or the narrower pinstripe?

There is a pic of 103 today from 7/27/73 in Coney Island as a QB after it was apparently restored as you can see the brass is polished.

At one time, there were two types of stripes. The one more familiar and which is still currently available is called “hickory stripe.” The other type which was called “pinstripe” had stripes about half the width of the hickory stripes. A few years ago, one of the workwear websites advertised something that they described as “pin hickory stripe” but there were no photos available and the item has since been discontinued. You would probably need to see a photo of both types side by side to be able to see the difference.

They ran on the QB in the PM too. When I planned to ride the NX, I saw that and got on it instead. I remember that, at DeKalb, I was reading the fancy-looking No Smoking sign, and the doors closed before I was finished. Otherwise I would have gotten off, taken an RR to Pacific, and then got the NX. As it turned out, I never did get to ride an NX.

I was a wide-eyed 8 1/2-year-old from South Bend taking in my first visit to New York. World's Fair one day, Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty the next day and the Circle Line the day after that. And riding on shiny new R-32s to boot.
