Tuscarora Almanac - July 22, 1965 - The Book of Strang and Unusual Occurences |
|
Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Fri Jul 22 10:52:07 2016 Tuscarora Almanac - July 22, 1965 - The Book of Strange and Unusual Occurences Today is Rapid Transit Day at the New York World's Fair. IRT Low-V Motors; 5286, 5290, 5443, 5466 and 5483 made a special run to the fair carrying revenue passengers from Queensboro Plaza. The cars had been refurbished and painted dark green with gold striping. A three car train of Standards, 2390-1-2, made a special run with invited guests from Coney Island to Queensboro Plaza where passengers could transfer to Q-Type 1622 A,B,C. The Standards were freshly painted with a coat of BMT Brown while the Q-Type was painted in the 1938 blue and gold livery. Blue and Gold are the colors of the city flag and also the official color of the World's Fair. The Lo-V and the Q later sat side by side in the Corona Yard where they were visible form the ramp leading to the fair. These cars went on to from the nucleus of the current transit museum fleet. I agree. What is interesting is that another Q unit 1602, although unrepainted, was stamped “museum” on the front of the end units yet the perfectly restored 1622 unit was butchered to make the BUs while 1602 could have been the unit converted back. Even at that, another single Q car 1612C was the one repainted in the blue and orange for preservation in the museum. While the efforts of the transit museum staff is to be appreciated for bothering to preserve the cars at all, sometimes their lack of accurate historical knowledge amazes me! |

And to think we were in the city on July 21 and 22 (my very first subway ride took place on the 21st, aboard a shiny new R-32 Norton), rode exclusively on the BMT both days, and not once did I see a single Triplex. Of course, I knew nothing about Transit Day, either. We went on the Circle Line boat ride on the 22nd and spent the afternoon at my father's cousin's house in Brooklyn, taking an R-32 TT to 71st-New Utrecht. |

True, but no one took the time, or cared, to think about having both an existing operable and already restored Q-type set; keeping it in the collection, and getting another Q-type* set to convert back to BU's, that's what's so sad.*the one stamped "Museum" in RandyO's post. So yes, we do have the parade of trains museum equipment, but it also could have included the Q-type set 1622 A-B-C, as an example of a successful el car conversion/modernization. |

Yep. But for those of us who know what was going on at the time, The MTA was actively looking for any and all "museum cars" and looking to scrap ALL of them. Lots of games had to be played to hide the few which survived throughout the system, and there were pretty serious limits on hiding places for them. We're VERY lucky that we have anywhere NEAR as many survivors as we do today. Really. And what remained of the other Q cars were in desperately serious deterioration "bad order." That they managed to save three units capable of being restored in any way was its own miracle. I'm sure Randy will elaborate on the details of the Herculean effort it took just to have what we still have. |

I know the story of saving/hiding the five car Low-V trainset - it was in Fischler's first book, and written about in other articles.During the 70s or 80s (?) there was also the scrapping of the R-9; the only surviving example from the entire fleet made by a particular manufacturer (don't remember which one). You are unfortunately very rigth about this - IIRC, the museum cars today are privately owned and leased to the MTA, to prevent anymore of them, from being scrapped by the agency. |

I know that R-1 100 ran in regular revenue service as late as 1971. There's a picture of that car at STL in Greller's New York City Subway Cars, "looking like she did all her working life", dated around that time. R-9 1802, and most of the Arnine nostalgia cars ran into the 1970s, and at least three of these--381, 1300, and 1802--are movie stars, having been prominently featured in the chase sequence of the 1981 film, Nighthawks, which starred Sylvester Stallone, Billy Dee Williams, and Rutger Hauer. |
