I know the story of saving/hiding the five car Low-V trainset - it was in Fischler's first book, and written about in other articles.

During the 70s or 80s (?) there was also the scrapping of the R-9; the only surviving example from the entire fleet made by a particular manufacturer (don't remember which one).

You are unfortunately very rigth about this - IIRC, the museum cars today are privately owned and leased to the MTA, to prevent anymore of them, from being scrapped by the agency.
