Up until 1966 when the TWU contract made the TA provide all required uniforms, M/M were required to wear pin striped overalls. There was also another type of stripe called “hickory stripe” which is a slightly wider stripe and was worn more by IRT M/M than the finer pin stripe which was a actually the preferred stripe. I can’t seem to find the pin stripe overalls any more but there are plenty of the hickory stripe overalls and matching jackets available. The matching jackets referred to as jumpers were also required as well as blue shirts (usually work shirts) and dark blue ties. After the 1966 contract provision, only C/Rs and bus operators received uniforms but M/M did not and for several years a lot of M/M just wore street clothes like the engineers on the NYC and LIRR. I’m not sure when it took place, but some time in either the late 1970s or 1980s the MTA started issuing M/M pinstriped overalls as uniforms until it was decided to have the T/Os wear the current blue C/R style trousers and black and white striped shirts. Even though it wasn’t required by the time I became a M/M I often wore the striped overalls anyhow. During the summer, M/M often wore what amounted to as pinstriped jeans which were a little cooler in summer months and were also permitted during the winter usually accompanied by the jumper. In lieu of the pinstriped jeans, M/M also wore ordinary blue pinstriped summer weight pants which I also did on occasion and they were acceptable as well. Of course during the summer months, removal of the tie was also permitted for both M/M and C/Rs.
