Well, adding to it is NYC also taking two additional days for a Muslim Holiday in September (though I believe one of those days overlaps with Yom Kippur, so this year it's actually one extra day).

It's tricky because NYC schools also I believe have a long-running "gentlemen's agreement" with US Tennis officials not to start the school year until after the scheduled conclusion of the US Open Tennis Championships (I don't know why that can't be changed to where that starts and finishes one week earlier, especially now that it's moved to ESPN).

I know where B&H is. B&H is on 9th and 34th, it's not reasonably near to the new station, which is what we were talking about before you butted in, traffic to the new station (your mixed up mess of a brain added in the rest of the subway).

why would anyone in their right mind use the 7 to get there when the IND is much closer? If you come out the correct exit stairs from the 8th ave line, you don't even need to cross a street to get there. So why would you use a deeper, further away station, when there is a shallower, closer one?

let's do some Math, if your low IQ is up for it.

the total Jewish population of the city of New York is about 1 million.

the total population of the city is about 8.5 million.

So the total Jewish population of the city is (and I'm being generous here) 12% of the city total. It's actually 11.7% but I like rounding.

When 12% stops to do something, what about the other 88%..?

New York Comic con got 151,000 visitors last year (even more than the "real" Comic con in San Diego_

4,000 is roughly two trains worth.

but, it still proves wally wrong. His original assertion was that if what Brian says is true, then the ridership numbers would remain low for the first three days at the new station.

If this event draws a crowd, if anything, it proves me right, there will be load.

The station is designed for thousands of people an hour all day long. It's real capacity will be very much under used for the first year or two. It won't get to it's true peak load until those towers start to open and people start coming and going full time. that was my main point in the on topic department before he started on his ranting and raving.

I remember back in the mid-1980's at the Jacob Javitts Center there used to be the huge PC Expo events that lasted a week. Then thousands of folks attended the computer fairs - with plenty of folks walking from the PC Expo 34th Street with their bags of computer items. The buses on the way to and from the PC Expo would be crowded. Inside the JJC all three floors were filled with exhibits and booths from hundreds of computer companies and suppliers. Often there was no way to explore all of the happenings in one day - requiring trips of 2 or 3 days to complete the journey. It was a fantastic time.

Now if the JJC could have such regular people-packed events after the new subway station opens, then the idea of a beautiful expensive "ghost" station will be averted.

Some of the large trade association shows have had shuttle buses running to their "recommended" hotels, public shows have very large crowds walking over from the PABT, subway or Penn, the event rates for parking are very high. The best known would be The Auto Show, and the Comic Con. Boat Show is big, but the loading bay door size restrict some of the really big stuff from being exhibited so it's not quite what it used to be. They are multi day and have huge attendance. But there are some other less well known events like the bar exam that can bring very large numbers all at once. Robin Hood Foundation fundraiser is a huge event, but that would be a limo and cab crowd.

Yes it is. People who live or work or typically travel along the 7 or one of the lines that connect more conveniently with the 7 than with the 8th Ave IND.

they'd have to be very regular, and the subway would have to be their primary route.

Willets Point is 249th out of 421 in subway ridership, it basically exists for the Mets, the tennis center and the park. The open lasts 2 weeks and the maximum number of home games an MLB team can play in a year is about 92. (81 regular season, plus assuming home field advantage the whole way and going the full distance in all series 3of 5,4 of 7 and 4 of 7). So heavy traffic there is maybe 1/3rd of the year.

Meanwhile 161st is 38th, because it's used every day by people who live and work around Yankee stadium, not just people going to see the Evil Empire in action.

I believe that the second day fall during the summer this year, so that is why there is only one fewer school day instead of two (although if you want to be technical, there are actually no fewer school days due to the Muslim holidays since school is starting one day earlier this year; of course, the addition of Lunar New Year as a holiday negated this, so there is in fact one fewer day than originally planned).

When I was growing up, there was a "gentlemen's agreement" as I remember that delayed the start of the school year in New York to the day after the normal conclusion of the US Open Tennis Championships. While that was not always honored, as I remember it was why the school year usually started the Monday after Labor Day, even in years where Rosh Hashanah fell after the school year started AND did not fall on a weekend. The idea was so that kids could attend the US Open, especially during the second week which has always been the week after Labor Day.

I've known people who don't care about Tennis the rest of the year (even for Wimbledon) but will watch whatever they could of the US Open.

As I remember, the "gentlemen's agreement" not to start the school year until after the US Open was specifically so kids could attend. This sounds like utter bullshit to me. Rosh Hashanah almost always falls after Labor Day (it requires a very specific set of circumstances to all occur simultaneously to fall on or before Labor Day). How about some solid proof of this supposed agreement existing? I highly doubt that if schools are closed during the US Open that many students are going to go watch tennis matches instead of whatever they would otherwise do on the last week of summer break.

I don’t know about any sort of “gentlemen’s agreement” regarding the relation between the tennis matches and the school but in the 1950s when I went to school, and before tennis became as popular as it now is, the school year always started the Monday after Labor Day. As I recall that was even the case when I went to high school which I graduated in 1962.

Is the extension in Manhattan of Queens? Thinking of coming to New York in September for the Yankees-Mets series and I've always enjoyed riding the #7 Train though as you should all know it is NOT my favorite line.

That's what I remember growing up. Whether true or not, that's what I remember hearing when I was younger.

AKA "during the amateur era." The open era in tennis began in 1968.

Did you grow up in Forest Hills near the tennis stadium? Possibly some kids in the area speculated that that might be the reason NYC schools opened later than those in surrounding communities, but it seems highly unlikely to be true.

I grew up in Manhattan, where the US Open was always made into a much bigger deal than it is. As said, I knew people who didn't care about Tennis much of the year BUT when the US Open came around they watched as much as possible.

Basically, that was legend growing up that school was not supposed to start until the US Open concluded. Obviously this year because of where religious holidays fall coupled with a late Labor Day that is impossible to honor without going into a year hoping there are no "snow days" at all.

Many I believe work as ball boys, and for many years you could get a "grounds pass" that allowed you to see matches on any court other than the "big three" (Ashe, Armstrong and Grandstand).

I believe the Juniors sections of the US Open are played mostly during the second week as well and that if so was likely why there such "gentlemen's agreements" that were legend when I was growing up in Manhattan.
