Well, adding to it is NYC also taking two additional days for a Muslim Holiday in September (though I believe one of those days overlaps with Yom Kippur, so this year it's actually one extra day).I believe that the second day fall during the summer this year, so that is why there is only one fewer school day instead of two (although if you want to be technical, there are actually no fewer school days due to the Muslim holidays since school is starting one day earlier this year; of course, the addition of Lunar New Year as a holiday negated this, so there is in fact one fewer day than originally planned). It's tricky because NYC schools also I believe have a long-running "gentlemen's agreement" with US Tennis officials not to start the school year until after the scheduled conclusion of the US Open Tennis Championships (I don't know why that can't be changed to where that starts and finishes one week earlier, especially now that it's moved to ESPN). Not true. NYC schools opening has nothing to do with the tennis calendar. |
