"1) the tunnels were extremely deep compared to NYC's and 2) the track infrastructure is actually designed to be less bumpy and noisy than that in NYC."

The Blue Line extension, which is what I'm referring to, is a tunnel box which is barely below the surface.

The Blue Line extension, which is what I'm referring to, is a tunnel box which is barely below the surface.

you didn't mention that in your initial post. you said "WMATA" which encompasses the entire WMATA system, not just the blue line extension. granted, you did mention specifically the blue line extension later but that's not my fault; please be more specific next time.

and still, just because WMATA can do something doesn't mean that it can be implemented in NYC. look at OPTO for just one example.

I think a nature trail is great. The payoff of an LRT advocacy on the Rockaway branch is nil, so I am going for what I can get.

The SAS and other projects still need a lot of political support and pushing, so that's where I am going to be.

look, a nature trail would be nice but it isn't needed here. if the line were converted to LRT then it could be incorporated somehow into a park, as the Kenosha trolley is. but, you've flip-flopped on your opinion, and you seem to not want ANY transit on that corridor, which is not for this board.

No, I said light rail was a viable alternative to subway use (which is perhaps the most useful use of the line).
You said removing the entire enbankment (which is improved, grade separated railroad ROW) then remove an additional 12 or more feet further was a viable use of that line.

Case in point..the 63RD STRRET QUEENS SUPEREXPRESS...

They really DIDN'T have a foot to stand on,as far as their complaint was concerned...
It only gained ground when the city was in trouble, and some stupid politicans got involved for some sort of political gain[votes].

Because of them..this area is serverly lacking "extra capicity" for rail service..which leaves the TA to deal with the complaints from the Queens Blvd riders.
But they do not care..but they care enough to cry the blues to the Transit Authority when a train breaks down..and there no way around the problem.

Today, the TA has given up on this section of Queens for subway expantion.

Because expanding it serves users better, and because THE COMMUNITY ASKED FOR IT.

Far better than holding the space for an LRT that a) is subject to NIMBY you are not going to overcome b) the MTA does not want to build

To eliminate any sight or sound of the train whatsoever. If you can even eliminate any bridges and have it always underground you reduce NIMBY a lot.

The total noise level at the property line could likely be made equal between the two modes. Your cut and cover subway would produce quite considerable vibrations which would be extremely difficult to damp out. As others have noted you'd need grates to ventilate the subway, which would certainly emit nearly every bit of noise. You'd also introduce the possibility that geotechnical engineering issues would damage adjacent properties.

A light rail on the other hand could be built likely 5 to 10 times cheaper than your needless subway, would fit much better with the ridership numbers a crosstown Queens line would have. By planting a fairly thick tree barrier between the tracks and the property line the noise from the already quiet LRVs could be reduced to the same level as the subway, without the vibrations a shallow subway would neccesarily bring.

so? a LRT can be incorporated into a park/nature trail and therefore uses the space more efficiently than either a subway or a nature trail.

NIMBYs didn't want the jamaica leg of airtrain built (especially because it wouldn't serve them), but the PA did it anyway. shows how NIMBYs can be overcome.

and who cares if the NIMBYs won't allow it and the MTA doesn't want to build it? this is solely a fantasy.

There was one transportation engineer who pretended he was a "community group" (George Haikalis) whose presentation was laughable at best and a couple of other people who used the same tactic.

I never saw George Haikalis' presentation so I won't argue with you but the late Steven Dobrow was one of the most intelligent people I have ever met and he opposed it for years and frequently wrote against it so I can't agree with you.

Considering that, in the end, you'd have to have an airTrain type vehicle meet the commuter train on the Rockaway Line anyway, you end up with a much poorer version of what you have now.

Not if they bought vehicles that were compatible with the subway or commuter rails.

Not a practical scheme.

Dobrow is an intelligent guy but he doesn't represent a community group and he can't work together with any coalition - so even if he does come up with a bright idea (this one was not his finest hour) he couldn't go anywhere with it.

Sure..
I mean what choice do we really have be to be "patient"?

One thing I am pushing for..is for the MTA to have the forsight to see an importand service improvement for Midtown.

1]SAS Phase 3.
Build the SAS line Phase 1 with a station at 55th st.

2]Operate a Queens Blvd service to this station via the 63rd st tunnel/Connector...[short turn some E/V services here,or a new Y train]

This would in fact remove some of the riders from the 53rd st tunnel..by giving them an opertunity they currently do not have..A terminal station in the area where riders will get a seat..close to areas of employment[Citicorp Center and others] and connections to other rail lines[E/V/6 at the nearby Lexington Avenue connected to the complex]
