The line already appears too much like it's part of the subway system, with the same transfer privileges available at all other transfer points similarly depicted on the map.

The map uses airplane bullets at all transfer points to airport-bound services, including AirTrain and the various bus routes to the airports.

The transfer points at Howard Beach and Jamaica should say "Extra Fare required." Otherwise the graphical depiction is fine.

I know it's not easy solution, not one that should be executed anytime soon anyway. But if the City or MTA is serious about doing anything with that ROW (which belongs to all of us, just like Yelowstone Park), then any encroachment needs to be removed and the property returned to public use in full, be it a rail-link, a trail or both.

False. I'm saying the open-cut method is cheaper than cut and cover because you cover only when construction is nearing completion.

No, it's not.

Look at LIRR's latest ESA segment. It is available on MTA's website. It is defined as open cut and will hold an interlocking to route trains headed for the 41 av tunnel or coming out of it. It will have a deck installed on top of it.

At least some rationality is on this board.
And Nimbyism is NOTHING new. This is not something that all of a sudden appeared. For example, what is now the L line was supposed to be built on an el from Montrose Ave through Wyckoff and to Broadway Junction. Early form NIMBY's in the 1920's in Bushwick opposed it, and they had it built underground as the rest of the line.

NIMBY's are not some all powerful force. They have been around since the first subways and els were built, yet they managed to get it done. I have seen propaganda sketches of horses running wild and people covered in smoke (from the steam engines), and complete chaos on the streets with a train passing overhead, when they were trying to get the els built in Manhattan in the 1800's...yet they managed to get it done.

I don't think a QB line (be it the V or R) would be successful at replacing the A Express in Rock Park. It would be slow and hated.

Why? Currently those Rock Park people have a dead end train, instead of a through train. ANd those people still would have the option of getting off at Broad Channel or wherever if they chose not to take the route via Queens Blvd. And people destined for lower Manahattan probably would anyway. However, the V or R would fill up for sure north of North Conduit. It's irrelevant where it starts, the Rockaway line subway line would have to terminate somewhere, and it would be silly to terminate it short of the connection with what is now the Rock Park Shuttle. What else would you suggest, terminating it at the new Rockaway Blvd station below the Liberty El? If it goes that far, it may as well connect to the shuttle that now terminates at Broad Channel.

I would not run trains at night as a fair concession to those would would literally hear trains running in their back yards.

There are people everywhere in the city that have trains running through their backyards, yet they survive, and people have no trouble selling their houses along those lines. So why are these Rego Park people "different" that they couldn't survive (or sell their house or lease another apartment) if it's such a big deal. They'll be other people willing to rent, or other people willing to buy, just like they do along any rail or subway line in the city, or anywhere for that matter.

LIRR commuter rail service along the ROW would not be possible until ESA is completed in 2012 and possibly even later.

LIRR is not the best use for the line anyway. The line would need rapid transit like service to be successful, and the LIRR is a commuter railroad, not a rapid transit provider anymore. The line would be suited for subway service, or Light rail, but not LIRR.
The line was a failure at the end as the LIRR was uninterested in providing rapid transit service, and ithe line was a failure as a commuter railroad. It's time for that past decades earlier. The only usefulness the line would have had for the LIRR was as an airport link, but that's moot now with Airtrain at Jamaica.
The line's usefulness for a Light rail line or subway to an area that has no subway service is invaluable.

Even if the ownership of the TWO track enbankment grade separated line's ownership was not intact (and it is, but for arguments sake let's say it's not), the city could take it back by eminent domain anyway. And since any encroachment is NOT because of ownership changing hands from the city, it's even more cut and dry.
And who is saying that either the truck company or the school bus company isn't using it legally? They very may well be through a lease by the city, and that lease of course would spell out what would happen if the city needed the line.
There is no question of the entire ownership of the line, who's ownership is intact, but even if there was, the city could even take adjoinging houses along the ROW by eminent domain if it needed too (if it needed room for electrical substations or whatever.

Te difference in when you cover it: If you cover it early, the cost of building what's inside goes up. If you cover it at the end, it makes working the site easier and faster = cheaper.

That being said though, Ron didn't write the gay sex book, it just happens to come up under his book "Handbook of Biosurveillance", which is some book about Biosurveillance which according to some website is the automated monitoring of information sources of potential value in detecting an emerging epidemic, whether naturally occurring or the result of bioterrorism.
It has nothing to do with gay sex, so have no idea why that book came up under Ron's book.

That only proves my point more. WMATA's tunnel design was explicitly designed to reduce noise, not to mention that 1) the tunnels were extremely deep compared to NYC's and 2) the track infrastructure is actually designed to be less bumpy and noisy than that in NYC.
