In all fairness I can appreciate what Christie was telling NJ transit. Clean up house and stop the BS before you get another dime. He knows of the political jobs and waste that exists in government agencies. And even after all the crying NJ transit did they were able to come up with plan #2 and save lots of bus service. Where I work at NYC transit its no different. One of my current bosses has a Brother who is a bigger boss and pulled up his baby brother up with him. When you have qualified people at NYC transit who have good ideas and can get much more respect from thier underlings who stay at one position because they are not related to the right person. It just seems that we in the public transit business have forgotten that our main mission is to bring people from point a to point b in a safe, comfortable and quick manner. And I'm sure its not just transit agencies. |

People that use transit or live next to it like for it to be inviting and as pleasant as possible to look at.Of course, but LACMTA's design consultants have bequeathed an ugly concrete structure on the local residents who will use that station. If you're going to blow more money on an expensive design, aiming for a blob-like concrete structure isn't the best use of tax dollars. Something like this would have been far more ideal, in my opinion. DC a lot and has learned just as DC has Which is interesting given that DC's station designs are considered by some to be the best examples of Brutalist design while others think the concrete design is an example of poor aesthetics in general. WMATA isn't "pretty" in an artistic sense, but it's better than some of the BART and PATCO stations of that era. |

The Northeast's highways are far more interesting in my opinion. LA is tentatively planned as a winter trip in conjunction with San Diego, presuming the funds are appropriated for it. Otherwise, the priority for now is German Stadtbahns at the international level and the Pacific Northwest and Central Canada at the North American level. LA and San Diego come after that, and I'll wait for Chicago after the (slight) improvements to the rail corridor to St Louis to knock of that city's small light rail network as well. |

Most of south LA is suburban with manicured lawns. Even Watts is suburban. LA doesn't really have a ghetto in the east coast sense. The closest might be Hispanic areas like Pico-Union or Westlake or maybe parts of Long Beach. Or maybe the central parts of South LA. |

My impression is that the farebox recovery rate is low on NJT's light rail system because the fare is set lowIIRC, from some readings that I'm too lazy to link to right now, the implication was that HBLR's farebox recovery is highly dependent on ridership, and the planners forecast roughly 50% farebox recovery at roughly 50,000 daily riders. Current ridership is at roughly 40,000 daily riders... |

So that doesn't explain the low ratio. While the ridership data is relatively recent, there has been no similar attempt at releasing such information for the respective light rail lines on an individual basis as far as I'm aware. So at this point, it's premature to conclude the whether the farebox recovery is commensurate with expectations of the planners. Now, if you can get some recent farebox recovery data along with the rate of evasion along with the amount paid in fines, we may be able to make some sound conclusions. |

I re-measured a straight line from the intersection of Ave C and West 8th to the waterline, and I got just over 2500'; my initial measurement was from West 8th and Ave D. The photos further down the thread show a more accurate location for the station, but the distance change throws off the entire calculation I made. Still not impossible, but obviously much steeper. And of course, the downward slope of the tunnel approach can continue past the water's edge, depending on the land and water usage in the area. |

I agree with you on all points, except your last; West Virginia was formed by what was recognized as the legitimate Union government of Virginia during the civil war. Love how the squeezed in the movement from the 'down-bound' freeway to the 'right-bound' freeway with a loop ramp, instead of the straight flyovers for ever other movement. |
