Your Thoughts On The R40 Subway Cars

What are your thoughts and memories on the R40 Slant and R40M subway cars and which line(s) did/do you like them on?

Remember when the slants were new and had the route color square with the large block capital letter and they didn't have the "hardware" they would acquire as a safety feature to narrow the spacing between cars?

One thing I liked was the railfan window in the first and last cars.

One thing that I especially loved about the Slants (this was not true of the Mods) was the look of delight on a small child's face as they got a full view of the tracks and tunnels. This actually happened on my last ride on June 12th, 2009 as a mother and her young (maybe age five) daughter got on at 125th Street. Seeing this, I immediately ceded the window and the little girl became thoroughly engrossed. They stayed on until 168th Street. This may very well have been the last time a young child ever enjoyed such a treat.

I will miss these cars, but I am glad I got to say goodbye the way I did. My favorite line for them was the Brighton Line, especially the outdoor portions, and the Manhattan Bridge. Also the "Dash" between 34th-6th Avenue and West 4th Street, where a record time of 1:48 was once recorded with #4415 the South Motor. Another favorite was the Canarsie Line in the late 90's and early 00's.

They were no slouches on the Alice/Abbott, either - especially before the whole cotton-pickin' system was slowed down. Never will forget how that train I took on Easter Sunday in 1978 rocketed and smoked along CPW. Those local stops were blurs.

The Slants had real get-up-and-go. Westbound out of Roosevelt on the "F", it was like being shot out of a cannon, and when you went down the ramp and heeled to the left, you'd better be hanging on to something! I'd never see an R44 or even an R car do that!

Perfectly stated.

Another favorite was the Canarsie Line in the late 90's and early 00's.

Those operators had an....exciting habit of riding right up on the timed signals too!

On the comfort level, though, the trains had an atrocious design. And while the railfan windows were a spectacular treat, the design was basically butt ugly.

No kidding! I actually had such an experience in the Brooklyn-bound tube back about ten years ago, with #4399 the south motor. He got up a full head of steam and ran right at the timers, going at what had to be 45 MPH at least - I said to my friend Simon Billis, who was aboard this train with me, that if we somehow managed to get hit by one of the timers, we'd wind up in the last car! A rather unsettling, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

As for the ugliness, nothing came close! They were SO UGHLY, they were actually beautiful.

THEY WILL BE SORELY MISSED. :O(

I remember it well!

My impression, never proven, is that BIE doesn't hit nearly as hard as it used to. Granted, I've never been on a train that had to dump at that speed, but last time that I had the pleasure, it was an R32 going about 25-30 mph. Wasn't anything awful; hell, it was less jerking over than T/Os that are constantly fanning the controller on the new tech trains.

But I remember some BIEs as a kid that would knock people over. And having experienced what I assume is the NYCT bus equivalent of BIE, that was something brutal! I have known ever since why they have so many lawsuits over that.

As for the ugliness, nothing came close! They were SO UGHLY, they were actually beautiful.

Loved the slants when they were on the A. I used to live in Linden Plaza back in the 80's and used to spend hours looking out my balcony window into Pitkin Yard watching all the movements.

Best memory is when I used to take the trip out to the Rockaways to Rockaway Playland looking out the railfan window.

And the last time I went BIE was aboard a Slant last October 22nd, southbound, just north of West 4th Street, in "B" service - with #4392 the south motor.

I remember....We were flying along - and hit something in the air... **

Suddenly ALL THREE HOMEBALLS and the station timer went ALL RED/RED right in our faces, and the T/O did his best but the inevitable CHOW !!!! came hard and some of us aboard (not myself or Steve B, who was right there to take it all in) hit the deck.

I remember when I was a kid and before the extra "hardware" was added to the ends of the R40s. They were either running as an E or F. The look of them and the end doors looked like something from the future and outer space as I told my parents (my father was a TO after starting out as a conductor). It is my favorite car style and I do miss them.

I thought the Slants were pretty cool. They certainly gave the system a different look.

And the RFW's were the best of any subway car class past or present. You could see more of the tunnels and tracks in an R-40 Slant than in any other car.

The slants were just awesome. Loved them on the A as it was a guaranteed fun ride. I also have fond memories of them making those local stop sprints on the AA with 4-car trains. Of course there's the 4th Ave express on the B.

The Mods were cool too, but always hated mixed consists and on the D where all 100 of them stayed for years - you could always find them mixed with R-42s.

One thing for sure is that the R-40s are ALREADY missed!

I thought they were good cars IMO. Fast and nice RFW view. Most of my R40 rides were on the Brighton Express on the Orange (Q), < Q > and B lines. My favorite part to ride them was going down that hill from Ave H to Newkirk Ave. In addition to the three Brighton express routes I rode R40s on the, (A), (C), (E), (F), (D), (Q), (N) and (W) lines.

Speaking of Transit dreams... I had an dream the other night that I seen a PA5 on the (F)! It was at Jay street I think I was riding the (A) or (C) line because I was on the Mantthan bound express Track at Jay Street. I think I got off and rode it because I remeber seeing the blue seats as I was riding it over the Culver Vuduct, but I don't remeber getting off though. A few months ago I had an Dream about Long Island Bus where I seen an Command Bus CNG RTS on the N6! It was awsome I could hear the Cummins 10G engine and the bus leaned to one side as it came into Hempstead Transit Center, then I somehow ended up near Kings Plaza and there was this repainted TMC RTS (In the MTA paint scheme, it was an 8xx series) signed up as the "S112 Staten Island Mall". I assume this route was an Kings Plaza - Staten Island Mall shuttle route.

The R40 is the train in my earliest childhood memory of riding the subway and it was on the (F)in Brooklyn. The design was very unique, it had a distinct "only in New York" look. True the seats were six degrees of torture for your back and ass but those trains had an amazing braking system and could slow down and pick up speed like no other. My longest association with them was on the Canarsie and Brighton lines. They handled the Canarsie line really well!

They were designed by Raymond Loewy, who also designed the GG-1 for the Pennsy.

The slant was a neat feature, but turned out to be a nightmare for people passing between cars, especially the slant ends. That's why the slant ends were initially locked between cars and then they added the extra stanchions and gating stuff.

And the "B" ends are just as bad, with no grab irons, and a wiggly chain surrounding two smooth, round ends. I avoided that at all costs.

But once they put the hardware out there, I used to enjoy the occasional ride (mostly on the "B" back in the old days) out in the fresh air, curled up with a cold one.

I'm going to group my opinions on both the slanted and modified varieties.

Back when they ran on the 6th Av IND, I remember they had a more hollow sound traveling on the rails than their R-68 counterpart, enabling me to determine whether it was a B or a D without having to face or look down the track.

When I was walking down the stairs to the platform, the fact they were R-40s told me which train it was at a moment's notice.

They probably had the best interior lighting: ambient without being overly glarish unlike the 142s and 160s.

The seating was simple. The small profile also gave the impression of airiness in a comparatively small space. The armrests were probably the most functional out of all of the subway car classes.

The ride was a gentle rumble such that you couldn't distinguish where the gaps in the running rails were. The effect was more favorable than the air-bag suspension on the NTTs, IMHO.

With their retirement at hand, taking the train isn't going to be quite as fun (fun being used as a comparative term.)

I will always associate the R40s for the B train because that was the car that usually was running there. Didn't ride the B much until it became a Brighton train but I enjoyed its time what little it may be on the West End. Remember seeing them as rust-buckets during the early 80's to a nice clean up to the sparkling overhauls done by Sumitomo. Alas, the slants are no more but I did enjoy them for quite a spell.

Back when they were new, they were the exclusive domain of the Ethel and Fred lines.

Also, the R40 slants ran on the (A) line, from October of 1977 to April of 1985. The slants ran again on the same line earlier this year, until their retirement in June.

As a Train Operator since December of 1995,i was able to operate the "Slants" on several different lines in the system;I liked 'em-a nice comfy seat, fast pickup and most importantly-good brakes.I was able to operate them on the "L Canarsie Line" but to me they never seemed home there, and looked out of place. They were most commonly seen on the "B" line, first on the "West End" and later they continued on the "B" Line as they operated on the "Brighton Line".They were fun to operate on the "Brighton Line" and the R68s cant even come close to the fast speeds the "Slants" could operate at.
The "Slants" would only visit the Queens IND on very rare occasions. They operated there "In Service" for one Sunday, testing the possibility of running 3 different local services out of 71st Continental Avenues just before the "V" Line began to operate. They would also very rarely visit when the "Q Line" was extended to 71st-Continental Avenues for a very short time.
Their time on the "A Line" was rather short, and i was not able to operate them there. However,i was able to get a precious few slides of them there, and it was with much sadness that i bid them adiou that last day that they ran and i was able to photograph them at Lefferts Blvd.Yes,they will be missed. It is also a shame that the "Higher Ups" in the TA did not take the time to preserve the right cars, and just saved random examples of whatever was lying around at the time. Some that i feel should have been saved were these:#'s4150-1(the First Set)4226-7(a non A.C. pair when first consructed)4444-5(what a cool Number)and lastly the first pair delivered,4250-1.These are just some of my personal favorites, and feel free to substitute your own.
So here we are, down to just a few last "Old Cars" to ride and photograph. The Mods are going fast,Jamaica Barn is retiring them quickly.Ride and photograph them-their time is short now. These are the last R-40s left, and "Modifieds" or not, they are still R-40s.Yes,folks-i just cant wait to see an entire fleet of R160s-what?Like 1200 strong?Wow!Now thats a thrill a minute-NOT! Gimme the SMEEs.

I won't miss them. The seats were very short. In 1968 they were a novelty with AC and the big purple "F" but they turned out to be quite ugly.
