As a Train Operator since December of 1995,i was able to operate the "Slants" on several different lines in the system;I liked 'em-a nice comfy seat, fast pickup and most importantly-good brakes.I was able to operate them on the "L Canarsie Line" but to me they never seemed home there, and looked out of place. They were most commonly seen on the "B" line, first on the "West End" and later they continued on the "B" Line as they operated on the "Brighton Line".They were fun to operate on the "Brighton Line" and the R68s cant even come close to the fast speeds the "Slants" could operate at.
The "Slants" would only visit the Queens IND on very rare occasions. They operated there "In Service" for one Sunday, testing the possibility of running 3 different local services out of 71st Continental Avenues just before the "V" Line began to operate. They would also very rarely visit when the "Q Line" was extended to 71st-Continental Avenues for a very short time.
Their time on the "A Line" was rather short, and i was not able to operate them there. However,i was able to get a precious few slides of them there, and it was with much sadness that i bid them adiou that last day that they ran and i was able to photograph them at Lefferts Blvd.Yes,they will be missed. It is also a shame that the "Higher Ups" in the TA did not take the time to preserve the right cars, and just saved random examples of whatever was lying around at the time. Some that i feel should have been saved were these:#'s4150-1(the First Set)4226-7(a non A.C. pair when first consructed)4444-5(what a cool Number)and lastly the first pair delivered,4250-1.These are just some of my personal favorites, and feel free to substitute your own.
So here we are, down to just a few last "Old Cars" to ride and photograph. The Mods are going fast,Jamaica Barn is retiring them quickly.Ride and photograph them-their time is short now. These are the last R-40s left, and "Modifieds" or not, they are still R-40s.Yes,folks-i just cant wait to see an entire fleet of R160s-what?Like 1200 strong?Wow!Now thats a thrill a minute-NOT! Gimme the SMEEs.
