I actually had such an experience in the Brooklyn-bound tube back about ten years ago, with #4399 the south motor. He got up a full head of steam and ran right at the timers, going at what had to be 45 MPH at least - I said to my friend Simon Billis, who was aboard this train with me, that if we somehow managed to get hit by one of the timers, we'd wind up in the last car! A rather unsettling, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I remember it well!

My impression, never proven, is that BIE doesn't hit nearly as hard as it used to. Granted, I've never been on a train that had to dump at that speed, but last time that I had the pleasure, it was an R32 going about 25-30 mph. Wasn't anything awful; hell, it was less jerking over than T/Os that are constantly fanning the controller on the new tech trains.

But I remember some BIEs as a kid that would knock people over. And having experienced what I assume is the NYCT bus equivalent of BIE, that was something brutal! I have known ever since why they have so many lawsuits over that.

As for the ugliness, nothing came close! They were SO UGHLY, they were actually beautiful.

THEY WILL BE SORELY MISSED. :O(

Indeed.

RIP in the briny deep.
