They were designed by Raymond Loewy, who also designed the GG-1 for the Pennsy.

The slant was a neat feature, but turned out to be a nightmare for people passing between cars, especially the slant ends. That's why the slant ends were initially locked between cars and then they added the extra stanchions and gating stuff.
