So you are not giving any credit to the folks that kept things going in a hopeless situation? Do you think it was easy for a local guy to keep a hardware store or food joint in business through the bad times? They did it anyway when it would have been easier to get out. Now they are being priced out with those businesses being replaced by another Starbucks or Barnes & Noble. The police, the 90s economy and the decline of crack were factors but the local community deserves its due. Like I said earlier I'm not too familiar with that particular community but these changes are happening citywide.

Don't come at me saying I don't "get it". I've "gotten" it a lot longer than you ever will. I know what racism is and isn't. And frankly, for the most part, it's time for our communities to shape up.

How does killing a member of one's community solve anything? It doesn't. But then again, you're coming at me when I hail from the same community. Nice.

You didn't read a single word of my posts either. I did recongize the racial elements involved. But I don't let that hold me down.

Ummm, shit was pretty bad. I mean, granted, there are always stores and such, but just becuase they were there doesn't mean they contributed.

If they were so significant, they why did things get so bad in the first place? And it's not like the same people aren't killing each other now, there's simply less of those types around to kill.

As far as the ever-so-used "Starbucks" boogieman, sure, they're there. But for the most part, most gentrified areas have plenty of small buisnesses. Look at Williamsburg or Astoria.

Bitter? No. More like fustrated....

Down here in Philadelphia, 3 men were shot to death during a card game in a bar (and yes, they were black). Did anyone see anything? Of course not.

Yet, a police officer shot a deranged young man threating his community and harming people, yet people are outraged.

You need to remember something: Every Black man that shoots someone, every Black man that robs someone, every Black man that sells dope to a child, allows the racists in our society to say "Look, we were right all along!!!111!!!"

I know it's bullshit, but King said it best: "We have to be better than them". I live on my own, I've held down jobs, I've never been arrested and I have no children. I do my best to live the message, and it pisses me off when people screw it up for the rest of us.

As far as "White America" goes, yes, there are assholes. But there are allies too. My mom is white and she gave birth to me from a Black man. And when he couldn't be bothered with me, my italian family took me in. I know what it's like to have white folk stare you down. I know what it's like to be called n****r. But my family told me that I'm stronger than that. My church tells me I'm better than that. My ego tells me that their hate can't hold me down. I am better than them, and therefore I live the message.

The days of Black/White are over. What we face is an economic struggle. We need to come together as a city and nation and demand the jobs/schools/transit/police/neighborhoods we deserve. All five boroughs are a family. You may not realize it, but you have a stake in what happens in the Upper East Side, just like they have to care about Bedford-Stuyvestant. When crime falls and schools improve, we all win.

As far as gentrification goes, I don't want to see the hard working folks lose their homes. That's why we need to build middle-class housing projects. We should demand all housing construction allow for community residents earning their keep to have a shot at owning their home. And we really need to kick the slime out of NYCHA and give those apartments to the people who truly need them. End of story.

Those rich kids pay lots of taxes, and believe it or not, many of them are nice people. Their tax money and their involvement improves the schools, brings greater demand for subway service, and pays for more NYPD. Things we all need.

The J was always a safe train to me since my father used it daily and I had ridden it safely on many occasions. The LL, OTOH was a whole different world (I once rode an M train from Fulton to Myrtle as a kid and felt as if I was in another dimension, despite using the same tracks and the same cars as the J did).

It's all psychological. I can walk along Fulton street and Eastern Parkway through Brooklyn no problem, while Harlem gives me the creeps. It's all about experiences.

I'm just saying, the JJ wasn't peaches and cream. Even today, when I look at the NYPD blotter map on gothamist.com, the J has been mentioned several times for crime-related incidents.

I will say this thou, I feel for scenic purposes, the Broadway El is one of the best urabn els in the country for getting a NYC-style feel of the neighborhoods. The Astoria el would come after it.

Technically, a few blocks northwesterly of 105st and Canarise stations is referred to as "East Flatbush". Brookdale sits right on the border of where Brownsville turns into East Flatbush.

But no, he's nowhere near the heart of the defined neighborhood.

I guess we should have listened to Moses then and built the Cross-Manhattan Expressway. An elevated highway would have been much cheaper than tunnelling all the way through, and there would have been the tax revenue from the skyscrapers he proposed to have built over the right of way.

You really can't compare the large parks Moses was talking about, and a little vest pocket park squeezed between two buildings that Caro says he should have been building too. Moses was grand, like Trump is today. He just wasn't interested in vest pocket parks, although he did build plenty of playgrounds which are a little larger.

If Harlem could have benefited from Vest pocket parks, why couldn't community leaders take little lots filled with junk and turn them into public gardens and maintain them if Moses wasn't doing it? It just wasn't fashionable back then and people didn't start doing it until the 1960s and 70s.

Now if someone can show that there was an effort to build little green areas, gardens, and parks on vacant land in Harlem, and Moses put a stop to it, while doing nothing himself to add greenery, then you might have a case he was a racist when it came to parks too.

Ahhh..now we get tot he root of the problem.

I feel you..and EVERYTHING your saying...
I can IDENTIFIY with that in the most intimate of ways..and Can agree.

Your furstration comes from a perceived helplessness..wishing you could do SOMETHING to stop the madness.
I understand more than you know.

My father was black..and my mother was American Indian mixed with Southern white decent. So for me..it was hard to deal with the kids who just loved to walk over to you and say "HOW"![Mom like to wear Something "NATIVE" in her dress ALL THE TIME..]..or [this one will get you]"You SURE that YOUR MOTHER.."?]because she "LOOKED white",while all of us look "black".

My parents taught us well,I figure..since none of us ever were "locked up" for anything stuipid..always stayed out of trouble..and were "God Fearing folk".

What I can say is this..even though you may feel powerless about certain things..you don't have to be completely.
You can give voice to your concerns by joining a group,a neighborhood watch..a church..or perhaps the BOY CLUB..to mentor a child.

I do it..my son does it..and so does my daughter.
We all do what we can to help..and if you can reach that ONE CHILD..to set him or her on the RIGHT PATH[doesn't matter black or white] then you will have accomplished SOMETHING.

Don't let the worlds Ill's case a dark shadow on your out look on life.
There's hope for everyone.

Weren't all locals marked with a double letter? If the L was the LL, then wouldn't the J be the JJ? I mean, last time I checked, the J has always run local along Broadway.

The Broadway El's been the J since Jan of 1973.

The JJ only lasted a YEAR[1967-68],And the J is a PART time EXPRESS along Broadway.

I'm still leery of the Livonia Ave. el. That area was SO bad in the 1980's ...

The "J" was given to the old BMT route #15, and it was a rush hour express along Broadway, hence the single letter. The "JJ" designation was for the #14 Broadway locals. It only lasted until 1968, when the KK via 6th Ave was introduced. However, the R16's used on the J in the 1980's never had proper signage installed in them, so they sported the tomato/orange colored "JJ" signs until the bitter end.

She was NOT attacked. A knife was produced, a demand for jewelry was made, but she ran off and the guy didn't follow.

You mean the New Lots Ave 3 train? Trust me, the murder tolls might not be as atrocious, but that whole area is still a shithole. That's Charles Barrone's territory. Nuff said.

From a previous message:

"Now if someone can show that there was an effort to build little green areas, gardens, and parks on vacant land in Harlem, and Moses put a stop to it, while doing nothing himself to add greenery, then you might have a case he was a racist when it came to parks too."

------

I will restate a portion of one of my previous messages:

"Robert Moses who through his Parks Department built almost no swimming pools, parks and playgrounds in areas where poor and minority folk lived was sending a very clear public policy message... This is not about racism, as we commonly understand it today. One does not have to be racist in thought for one's deeds to have a discriminatory impact. Not only was he in charge of the Parks Department, but also in his lifetime he was in charge of or heavily influenced 12-16 different public agencies and authorities at the same time."

"Some may think that a bus trip to a picnic that takes a bit of time ... is not an example of a kind of discrimination... Often these folks truly fail to understand that the nature of racism, prejudice and discrimination - it’s usually not in the major activities, but in the small almost comical mundane common everyday kinds of statements, activities, actions, rules and practices. This happens to such an extent that such a discriminatory affair becomes "normal"."

I (Michael549) ever called Robert Moses racist, or a racist, or in any of my messages accused him of racism. What I said that he (and or the people under him) made a series of policy decisions that in demonstratable ways had a discriminatory impact. I agree that Robert Moses built plenty of playgrounds, but when the distribution of such playgrounds favor a "certain group of people" and at the same "disfavor another group of people" - then it is a fair question to ask "what is going on?" When one looks at the reasoning behind such policy decisions, and also at the implications of those policy decisions - one does have to wonder.

For example in the quoted text Robert Moses questions the cost of smaller playgrounds, the need to tear down tenements, the relocation of tenants, etc. All of these are laudable questions. However coming from a man who routinely tore down buildings for his highways and other projects, paid extreme amounts for public improvements, gave residents little time to move or to find new homes -- it kind of rings hollow. One could suggest that this period, the 1930's it was early in his career, and that the concerns were real.

Why would anyone want the Parks Department to build little parks when the private sector could so? In your suggestion that community leaders could take junk filled lots and turn them into parks - there is a missing point. The owner of said junk filled lots at any time could always take back their property and use it for any purpose that they want. Usually property owners can get a better return on their investment than in using it as a park where children play for free. The owner has to pay property taxes, and few see much of a return on their investment with parks. That is the major reason why there is little parkland available in the city, if the Parks Department does not build it. That also happens to be reason for why the Parks Department was created in the first place to give the city "lungs - breathing space" - because there were no places for children to play except the streets.

Mike

Between 1968 and 1972 I sometimes rode the A late at night from Rockaway Blvd to Eastern Parkway, then changed there for the LL to Union Square.

I always rode in the conductor's car. For whatever reason, the A made me more nervous than the LL.

The J was always single originally because it ran express on Broadway, as did the M for a while. That's why both were assigned single letters

It would have been a good addition to the road network. All that traffic now uses the local streets in Manhattan, an already congested Manhattan, both Canal St and 34th are a nightmare. Yes, it would have temporariy scarred the city when it was being done, and a lot of buildings would have been lost, but a lot of them were lost later anyway. And within a few years, if they did it perhaps in a cut, they could have built over the cut.
