The "J" was given to the old BMT route #15, and it was a rush hour express along Broadway, hence the single letter. The "JJ" designation was for the #14 Broadway locals. It only lasted until 1968, when the KK via 6th Ave was introduced. However, the R16's used on the J in the 1980's never had proper signage installed in them, so they sported the tomato/orange colored "JJ" signs until the bitter end.
