This is why at-grade crossings should be removed or consolidated on commuter tracks.

Yes, it would be HUGELY expensive, and it can't be done in some locations due to the grade of the tracks. However, it would also help remove some of the lower speed limits in those sections which would decrease the commuting time.

Easy. Pass a law allowing the railroad to tear up grade crossings at its own expense and for highway authorities to build replacement bridges at their own expense (if they need to be replaced at all). That way, the railroad doesn't get lumbered with the cost.

So.....someone please explain to me the chain of events.

It looks like the car that hit the UP loco fishtailed towards the loco. If you look closely. It looks like the right side hit the loco first, b/c the left side has the frame bent outward, kind of like when you open a can. So I'm assuming that that train was traveling diesel end first.

Am I wrong?

Also, how the hell did that 1 car end up all the way off to the side?

My guesses are

1) Idiot parks car, runs away.
2) Train hits car
3) Train picks switch, rear end of lead car clobers the UP locomotive
4) 2nd Psgr Train hits remnants of 1st Psgr Train.

Why do railroads deserve an inherent priority over roads under all circumstances? I agree railroads have been screwed at times, but that doesn't justify the opposite extreme.

Brother Elias, that is exactly what happened.

The northbound train was just in the wrong time at the wrong moment, it was hit at the rear end of its 1st car, front of second car, by the jackknifing cab car that plowed into the UP engine. And the last car of the train, cab car 623, was completely knocked over and wound up where it did by the last moments of the jackknifing cab car 625 on the head end of the southbound.

The animation I saw on TV showed trailer 133 coming in contact with cab car 623 (on the northbound train), knocking it over. Damage to the forward end of trailer 133 is consistent with this kind of a hit.
This would be secondary impact to cab car 625 hitting the loco.

Because Mr. Alvarez's truck was wedged between the rails and not sitting at a grade crossing, it became an "immovable object," Mr. Solow said, vaulting the front car of the train into the air and causing the cars behind it to twist on their couplings and fold in on one another like an accordion...

Mr. Solow said that Metrolink and most other passenger trains are designed to withstand a collision with a light vehicle stopped at a grade crossing. The cab car in the front of the southbound train had a reinforced frame designed to deflect or destroy vehicles parked at level grade crossings.
Normally at a grade crossing the car is smashed to smithereens and the train stays on the track," Mr. Solow said. "But this car was wedged between the tracks, and the only way for the cab car to go was up."

Indeed there were many such collisions between trains and cars on grade crossings. For both diesel and MU equipment the damage to the trains have been astoundingly minimal. Really just a few scratches. So, what the hell happened in LA. I never heard of a motor vheicle on tracks derailing a train. Usually, the train wins big time!

The vehicle was wedged between the rails. When the train hit it, it was like hitting a bumper. As a result, lead truck of the cab car climbed up the vehicle and went sideways. Well, look at it this way.

The car is jammed into the tracks somehow, so that it cannot move.

Now the train arrives at (say) 50 mph.

Normally it would shove the car several hundreds of feet, but this time the car did not move.

The truck carring the railcar stopped when it hit the immovable object,
the train carbody, still moving at 50 mph departs from the truck and flies over the obstruction as an airborn missile.

I guess the part I'm finding unbelievable was that the Jeep Cherokee could have been "wedged" in there so well as to make this whole scenario possible. The Jeep's tires probably had to have been sitting between the ties (and not on top of them) and the width of the Jeep at the tires must have been just less than the inside width of the rails. And then when the cab car hit it, the Jeep would have to have been instantly forced "tighter" into its "cage" to cause the cab car to have nowhere to go but up and over the vehicle. Amazing.

Not necessarily! If he only wanted to kill himself, then it is entirely possible that he just wanted the train to whack his Jeep (killing him) and then go on its merry way. And at a normal grade crossing, that is what would have happened.

Those Bombardier cab cars haven't got shit for "deflecting or destroying" vehicles at grade crossing accidents. That's why yesterday's accident, and two others, resulted in cab cars leaving the rails after encountering something at a grade crossing, whatever they hit went under the car, lifted it enough to derail. (Metrolink also had two major crossing accidents involving large trucks with huge loads on trailers....both were engine-first trains. Neither derailed, even though the locomotive carbodies sustained moderate to heavy damage. And nobody was killed in either incident.

Basically, all that's there is a piece of metal to hold Metrolink's lousy horns in place. The big Airchime K5LA's on the cab car roofs are just hood ornaments -- the real, working horn is a nasty sounding Nathan P-series two-chime mounted in the piece of metal they call a pilot. Most of them sound like a strangled goose. The last orderof cab cars came without the roof horns and have a screeching Leslie horn under there.

Actually, those Bombardier cab cars are somewhat light (108,000 pounds) and there isn't much of a "pilot" to deflect stuff in its way.

As a result, whatever they hit, if it is sizeable, gets wedged under the front end, lifting it enough so the flanges become ineffective....and then we know what happens there.

That's what I meant. If he was on the grade crossing, this wouldn't have happened. It is possible he didn't know (heck, I didn't know) that placing his vehicle there would make the train derail. One reason I can think of for why he parked on the tracks was to get out of the way of automobile traffic, and to prevent someone else driving right by from pulling him out of his Jeep.

All cab cars I have ever seen have the "cowcatcher" bars in front of the lead truck.

Yeah, and after a rear-end accident they'll demand engines on both ends.

I have an idea. Weigh down the bottom of the cab car with cargo (provided by some supplier with heavy enough cargo). That would prevent some derailments.

There are so few cab car derailments to begin with that what you suggest is a waste of time.

That's right. Just look at the body design of the cars. The slant makes it look as if it were meant to push an object beneath the railcar, which would then it turn lift the rail car.

I don't know if someone posted this. If anyone did, I appologize.

I highly doubt the answer is yes, but by any chance, did the engineer of either train survive the crash?
