Must have been UMTA's idea of an off 'the shelf' design for all transit operations.

When BART looked for cars, IRRC St Louis as well as Budd bid onthe job. There was a full page ad in Mass Transit or whatever it was called back then showing a prototype car. The SOAC followed the dumb space age front end look.

IIRC it was pretty sophisticated for its time. You could preprogram a top speed and put it in multiple and the train wouldn't exceed that limit. It was demonstrated while descending from the Manhattan Bridge.

Purely Spartan at best..just like the IRT itself.
Too bad this came at the cost of a major shop and yard.
The shop is gone, but the yard is still there.. covered up by a towering housing complex... built on top of a huge deck built over the yard.
Similar establishments we're created over the Jerome Yard...the New platform over the Amtrak,New Jersey transit open cut on the west side.

While we are on the subject, why haven't the MTA built a station over in the Picking Yard...next to the development there?
It would be well used.

Selling air space is profitable.

Corona Yard would have value but I think engineers said it isn't doable.

Good question about Pitkin.

Lenox as a barn would not work. Too congested. Those guys like parking.

207 St Yard was expanded to allow for the maintenance of IRT cars eliminating the need for the 148 St main shop. As for Pitkin, the problem with that unlike Lenox where the new station at 148 St is merely an extension of an existing line, a station in Pitkin Yd would require the establishment of a completely new branch apart from the mainline and consequently the establidhment of a new off hours shuttle to serve it when Cs are not running.

The master controller was very similar to the one on the R-44s and 46s. However it did not have the speeds indicated in the top if the control console. Instead it had push buttons that reminded me of the push buttons on an old fashioned jukebox. Each button was marked for a specific speed and when the M/M selected the desired speed he could move the controller all the way to full multiple and the train would not exceed that speed. If the train were at high speed and the M/M pressed a button for a lower speed, the train would immediately slow to that speed.

Like the R46 holster control panel.
It had definite speed control buttons.
I saw for myself how some operators used it along the Queens Blvd Express,in "regulated mode"..65mph!

I loved it... songs that traction motors made was music
Today..yeah. We are treated to Violins of different pitch...by R160 subway cars.

Oh yeah.
That's what the intentions were.
But for Older systems like Chicago, those cars were limited to the Yellow Line, since the CTA is IRT sized...and the Yellow Line is a former Railroad.

The Boston MBTA RED Line is pretty much the same as the subway in NYC,just like Philly's Broad st subway.

There were plenty of subways being planned And built at that time, but none of them liked our R44 subway car design too much(which is what Soac was, basically)

The BART based there cars off the R40..while WMATA designed their cars to be Like our commuter equipment LIRR/PENN Central M1 cars.
Atlanta toned down their cars to resemble less suburban fare, more transit oriented.

"Corona Yard would have value but I think engineers said it isn't doable."

They did? Based on what? The whole area is a built up landfill/swamp that supported the weight of Shea Stadium and now Citifield & all those Worlds Fair buildings. From strictly an observers non engineering point of view, I cant see what problem would be.

The WF buildings were temporary so if they settled due to poor foundations that wouldn’t be an issue because they were torn down after two years.

Decking the yard would require piles to be driven between the tracks. A stand-alone building like CitiField or Shea can have piles driven as close together as necessary.

Why make up stuff?
You know Corona Yard was never on the map to be decked over.
Especially with land a plenty around it.

In Manhattan,Air rights is a tricky real estate move that's ridiculous in nature, but because of how the system is made up..it's "valuable" to developers.
One Vanderbilt was built by Bloomberg using AIR rights.

Funny how That worked out...they moved that building from ON TOP OF GRAND CENTRAL Terminal, redesigned it..now there's Another super tall being built right next to it,1646 ft tall..

Why?
Because New York wants a stupid tall building.
Picking can have a closed off Train station, that could serve as a terminal for C trains...or rush hour A..or The Rockaway Shuttle.
Linden Plaza station, tucked away in the corner ADA compliant...

Lots of people would use that station, especially coming from Queens.
If the parking facility is expanded, a true park and ride could be worked out.

Also..a station could be built at the New Lots Yard at Linden Blvd IRT...one stop extension.

I was a regular rider in the late 70s of the Qns Blvd line to 179.

Every now and then I'd be in the first car of an R/46 and peek thru the window and look at the speedometer.

I must have been in slow sets of equipment since I'd only see the train get to 45-50 MPH around Woodhaven Blvd and then after 67th Ave before Continental Ave.

How would either shuttle be able to serve Pitkin Yd? The Rock Pk shuttle goes nowhere near Pitkin Yd and the Lefferts shuttle would have to go into the Yd and change ends to access Euclid and in doing so would also have to bypass 80 (Hudson) St and Grant Ave.

Even though the Yellow line like the Purple line were former Railroads (Not true RRs but interurbans) Its clearances were the same as CTA’s since the North Shore had to clear the CTA station platforms. As it was, the Yellow Line platforms at Dempster and part of the platform at Howard had to be shaved back to clear the SOAC. Temporary wooden gap fillers were installed at both locations that would be extended when regular CTA equipment stopped there.

Initially, standard operation was to be in “wayside regulated” mode, but there were few incidents that caused RTO mgmt to change it and require "wayside manual” at all times.

Not all WF buildings were temporary. Think of the old US pavilion Louis Armstrong tennis stadium and the NYC pavilion along the GCP which was a holdover from the '39 WF.
If the $$$ and fire in the belly determination lined up, they could build over the Corona Yds. With the LIRR & #7 train nearby, it would be an ideal spot.
As far as pilings not being driven down to bedrock hindering construction, think of the eastern tower of the Brooklyn Bridge. That is not down to bedrock & has been there awhile

What's stopping them from building a switch to the new station from the ELEVATED?

The shuttle could run into Euclid..then to the new station, then back out to the Rockaways using the yard leads, which would become shared trackage.

Please stop making up situations.
Anything can be over come with ingenuity and a can do attitude.

A "ROUND-ROBIN".

A "FOUR-CAR ROUND-ROBIN"

But sometimes some terminals wound not be included.

From Lefferts to Pitkin Yd. possible but Hudson would be bypassed.

From the Rockaways to Lefferts, NOT!

From Lefferts to the Rockaways, NOT!

From Euclid to Pitkin to Lefferts, and back but Hudson would be bypassed on the return Yes!

From Euclid to Pitkin to the Rockaways to Pitkin, to Euclid, possible but would bypass Hudson.

So on the return from the terminals to Euclid, either Pitkin ur Hudson will be short changed.

The easiest thing to do would be to use the two westernmost tracks at Pitkin yard for a terminal for the C, similar to 148/Lenox. The C already goes halfway there when it does the relay south of Euclid.

That would mean you would need 3 shuttles, the A to Lefferts the H to Rock Pk and the C from Euclid to the yard.
