I'd guess that 20% - 40% of people currently working from home will continue to do it full time. Another 20 - 40% of people currently working from home will be working a hybrid schedule of some days WFH and some days in the office and the remaining 20 - 40% of the population will return to the office full time.

Who does or doesn’t work from home will depend on the whim of the employers. While the pandemic is still rampant, the workers can effectively use health reasons as excuses top work from home. Once it is perceived that the pandemic no longer exists, the employers could demand a return to normal working conditions.

The problem with not extending the SAS to somewhere in the Bronx is that people who board in the Bx and are already on their trains would probably not want to bother changing trains since they are already moving in their desired direction.

When the MTA demolished the NYWB viaduct south of E 180, they literally cut off a lot of options.

My preferred way of bringing the SAS to the Bronx would have been to run it along the NEC, up the viaduct, and literally end right at the NYWB station. Leave the White Plains Rd, and Pelham lines with the IRT, as they have been for 100+ years.

MAYBE, but only MYABE in the future, bring the SAS back to the Dyre, but even that I don't favor very much. I still think it's probably better for the Dyre Ave Line to remain with the IRT.

I still think that the cost and disruption associated with tunneling under Astoria would reduce the likelihood of this ever happening. The "shoreline" route traverses what is now a 100% industrial area that also has the benefit providing better access (directly across Bowery Bay) to the airport.

Honestly, it would be better to have a stop in Queens before the train arrives in Manhattan, so a transfer station somewhere on the shore might be of use. But there's also the appeal of an express trip to the East Side, with the connections/transfers that are part of phases III and IV.

Also, I did the reverse commute to Westchester for several years. The trains were very full, but not starting at GCT. The stations with the most originating customers were 125th, Fordham, Williamsbridge, and Woodlawn. Plenty of people living closer to the Q than the 6 would be happy for the Q to go to 125th.

My "plan" in the past prior to the demolition of the NYWB Viaduct was basically the same as yours except it would have two branches. One runs the full length of Manhattan and is joined at 72nd Street where the Q joins now. One branch runs enters the Bronx along the NEC, up the viaduct, and through the old NYWB station at 180th st and then on the Drye Avenue Line. The other goes down 3rd Avenue in the Bronx to Fordham Rd.

Before plunging into a "Utica Ave" project I'd suggest extending the "M" train from Metropolitan Ave to the Upper level of Roosevelt Ave.

And activate and connect the Rockaway Branch.

The Right of Ways are still there, above ground, mostly and would serve transit starved lands.

Im looking at the Montauk Light rail project and the BQX as starter LRT systems.
The LIRR rows can accomidate light rail lines Brooklyn and Queens..with extensions to tje Bronx and Manhattan via various East river crossings.

Even Staten Island can get a piece via the Narrows Bridge.

I figured 34 Av instead of Northern Blvd so that local trains wouldn't stop at two stations called "Northern Blvd" 3 stations apart. The block is about 600 feet long so it could have entrances at both.

And I included Astoria Blvd. I'd position the station with northern exits at 23 Av and main entrance at Astoria Blvd. Alternatively, the station in that area could be under the GCP, with exits at 23 Av and along Ditmars Blvd, to better serve the residential blocks north of the GCP. Name it, I dunno, "81 St/Ditmars Blvd" or something since it's very close to that block.

It would be very close to the Terminal A station, but that's not much of a concern IMO because it's not the same as overlapping the catchment areas of local stations.

That would indeed restore transit access that was lost nearly 50 years ago. So in that sense, I like your idea. But nowadays, the Third Avenue line would have to be a tunnel. The 180th Street complex would have to be substantially modified as well, to accommodate east/west access.

If the NYWB viaduct had remained in place, the actual NYWB platforms could have served as a terminal. But that's water under the bridge...

I was only referring to the portion in the immediate station area, not the area N/O the station. By the way the 2 trackways never become 4 only 3. While there is a ramp between the upper and lower level S/B there is no corresponding ramp on the N/B side as the bellmouth from the N/B lcl tk on the lower level just ends in a blank wall.

When I was the MN ticket agent at 125 about 15 years ago, there was a big reverse commuting crowd. They were mostly from the upper east and west side, arriving by spousal drop-off or car service. The largest crowds were for the trains that left 125 between 8-9AM. At times, the crowds were so thick in the platform that you couldn't see from one end to the other.

The Vanshnookenraggen Second System map makes it clear. The Manhattan-bound track from the branch would ramp up to the same level as the terminal to cross over the mainline and then ramp down (the ramp is visible today), but the Queens-bound track did not have to cross over anything so only a flat bellmouth was needed.
