Tuscarora Almanac for August 8

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Aug 8 07:48:32 2018

Tuscarora Almanac - August 8, 1956 - The Book of Wrecks

Harlem River, New York
Circle Line Sightseeing Yachts

The Circle Line yacht SIGHTSEER (later CIRCLE LINE V) rams the Madison Avenue Swing Bridge on the Harlem River injuring thirty three people.

The SIGHTSEER had a long and interesting career. She was built in 1902 as steam yacht CELT and was later renamed SACHEM. During World War I she served the US Navy as a floating electronics laboratory. After the war was over she became a fishing boat operating out of Sheepshead Bay. When World War II began she again joined the navy as a sub-chaser and was designated as PYc-25 PHENAKITE. In 1946 she began sailing for Circle Line Sightseeing Yachts as the SIGHTSEER, then CIRCLE LINE SIGHTSEER and finally CIRCLE LINE V. She was retired in 1977 and acquired by an investor in Ohio. Today she sits on a creek in northern Kentucky rusting away.

Avid: That first picture is fantastic. The Circle Line boats were painted in "steamboat white" at that time. Note the New York Central ferry in the background.

It was a different time. If you see fan trip pictures from the 40's and early 50's all the men are wearing suits and ties. The younger boys aren't wearing jackets but they are sporting sweaters and ties. The few ladies that on sees are usually dressed in their Sunday best.

Yep. Here's a pic from a Flushing Line train taken in the 1940s. Everyone shown seems dressed in their "Sunday Best"

I agree that picture was probably not taken on a Sunday. But people then wore what we now call "Sunday best" all week long. I thought that was what Jim meant.

I know that's what Jim meant, but I feel that it's not their "Sunday best" as such. It might be what some modern people consider "Sunday best," which is sad.

Here's another pic of Flushing line commuters dressed in their non-Sunday "Sunday best" from the 1940s. It was a figure of speech used much when I was a kid. Just another example of how folks like my parents dressed going to work back then.

As a kid growing up in the '50's and '60's , we had three set of clothing.
We had Sunday clothing, which could be handed down to the next level, which was school clothing, lower down was play clothing.
Whether Church or school, we had to change to play clothing after being finished with what ever the event was.

In the late '90's casual Fridays kinda broke down the "rules".

I wear a suit and tie. I consider it uncouth to walk around on the street without a jacket. I also own a three-piece.

One advantage of this is that suits are more expensive than casual clothing. It’s better if working class people don’t waste suits by wearing them so often. Moreover, people who can’t wear suits for practical reasons (they need to wear appropriate work clothes) no longer have to waste time changing clothes at work. I only bemoan professional slobbery.

I don’t think anyone has anything against working class people wearing appropriate workwear on their way to work. The problem has become that a number of corporations have severely relaxed their dress codes for those in the white collar jobs in which the personnel should look professional. When I went to Catholic high school, although we didn't have actual uniforms like some schools did, we were required to wear jackets, ties and reasonably dress type pants to class. Chinos were acceptable but jeans were not.

enough with the chinos, ties etc. A relatively new pair of Levis, a well tailored shirt w/ two flap pockets, and good steel toe boots are a fine get up. I can tie a 'Windsor' but why would I?

Back in the day, at Brooklyn Tech, ties were not permitted, the reason give was some of the machinery could possibly catch on to the tie, and the result would be harmful injury.
Chinos were acceptable, but blue jeans were not and garrison belts were forbidden.
The reason, the movie "Black Board Jungle". But Motorcycle Jackets were allowed.
Go figure.

My company has "business casual" Friday's and for the entire summer. There is a dress code that explains and gives examples of the does and do nots. If you are meeting with outsiders, I am expected to wear as suit and tie no matter the day or time of year.

As my job, duties and responsibilities has changed over the years, I don't normally do casual Fridays. In the summer I tend to come in without a suit, but with a nice pair of slacks, button down shirt with a tie (and if I don't come in with a tie, I have several I keep in my office and put one of those on when I get in. I also keep a white dress shirt and a blue suit in the office just in case).

Growing up in the 70's I like Avid Reader had school clothes, Sunday going to church (or "fancy" family function)clothes and play clothes.

You would if your boss wants you to. When I was in the schedule office, the director of rapid transit schedules was extremely lax about dress requirements and most of the schedule managers looked more like janitors than transit professionals. The director of surface schedules, however insisted that his staff wear collared shirts and ties when on duty and each surface schedule manager kept a tie in his desk which he put on when he sat at his desk. I was about the only rapid transit schedule manager who wore a tie at work because I felt that just because my director allowed us to dress like slobs, I was a manager and wanted to look like one!

I can see a safety reason for not wearing articles of clothing that might be hazardous under certain conditions that might exist in a specialized school, but my school was strictly academic so there were no dangerous circumstances. Actually Bkln Tech could have allowed ties but made sure that they had to be removed in areas where they might prove to be a safety hazard.

I can't dress non-casually anymore. For a while I was under a dress shirt+tie requirement, so I bought a lot of them. Then several reorganizations happened and our group ended up mixed in with all the unionized folk (where such requirements are unenforceable). I still dressed well-ish simply because I liked the shirts/ties I had bought.

But now, my current team has no one at all who was ever under the requirement, all the way up the chain of command. Out dressing the three levels of management above me makes me stick out too much, especially when "business casual" has degraded to t-shirt and shorts.

MN Conductors, Ticket sellers and other customer service reps were required to wear ties on duty as part of their uniform. But the ties had to be clip on for safety reasons. If a customer was irate enough to esclate his/her disappointment to the level of physical confrontation, it usually started with an attempted yank at the tie.
Many a customer over the years were frustrated in addition to angry, inasmuch they were now beyond pissed that the fruits of their reaction was just a clip on tie.
You'd often get it back when the anger management challenged would just fling it on the ground & storm away.

That was the same logic with NYCTA. When the TA started issuing C/R uniforms in 1966, the ties were clip on.

Actually dress requirements are enforceable among union members as long as they are reasonable. If actual uniforms are required, in most cases the company either issues them outright or provides a uniform allowance.

Hmm, interesting. The "common knowledge" was that a dress code could not be enforced on the union members without providing funding to purchase conforming clothes, perhaps started as a rumor. Sounds like this is on the same level as the so-called law "restaurants are required to provide tap water free of charge" which similarly does not actually exist.
