Chelsea and the Meatpacking District were dumps when trains ran there and that didn't change until it became certain that nothing was ever gonna run there again. The area around the Houston/2nd Ave station was a dump for decades even though there was a subway station right there, 15 minutes form midtown. The influx of foreign money into NYC has pushed up the prices of all housing, with a serious trickle down effect. The result is that anywhere that isn't too long a trip to midtown is in high demand. The high line area would be in even higher demand if somehow the trip to midtown could be reduced by 10 minutes. That doesn't necessarily mean that the best use of NYC transportation dollars would be extending the 7 or the L farther. |

If it is considered property deeded to NYC as park land, it normally requires approval of the State Legislature to use any part of it for a non park purpose. There are some exceptions (like acreage swaps) but it is very hard to undo a park. I am not certain that this is what applies to this property, but if it is now owned by NYC and listed as parkland, good luck. |

If the line were elevated high above Rikers, that would actually help avoid the problem of steep grades leading to the bridge. I guess there could be several horizontal barriers that would prevent climbing. The supports for the Hell Gate viaduct on Randall's/Ward's Island were also designed to not be climbable, and the design wound up making them quite attractive. But the chances of this being built are still nil. |

You won't hear me defend any of those behaviors. That said, when the SUV or delivery truck takes out a cyclist who is going the correct direction in the correct lane in full daylight... Before I quit riding, I always displayed lights fore and aft. Have to say though, that I got some crap from drivers angry at me for being in the traffic lane as prescribed by CA motor vehicle code. What do you propose to serve Wash Hts and CPW lcl service when the B isn’t running. The c can cover CPW and 8 Av at other times, but what about the other times. Having the C terminate at 145 St or extended to 168 St was done in the past and the MTA changed it for the sake of service consistency. Leaving the R and the N the way they are is the most acceptable way to operate the service since unless a maintenance and inspection facility is built in your proposes Astoria yard, complicated drill moves would still be required to get the cars either to Jamaica or CIYd for inspection and maintenance. |
