The width of streets is irrelevant with deep bore tunnels.You only need enough width for station mezzanines. Eminent domain can be used to demolish buildings at station locations for this purpose. After completion, the properties would be sold with station entrances inside the new buildings. |

It duplicates existing overcrowded service.One should look at when the service is overcrowded and what the service level is before embarking on a program that will suck up scarce capital expansion dollars. The justification for building the current SAS expansion to 96th St, used Lexington Ave service levels that were 25-33% lower than what was operated in the 1950's. Had they used the actual 1950's service level, there would have been virtually no passengers standing during the morning peak period. Adding service to the Lex was not one of the options considered in the analysis. Travel patterns have also shifted. The anecdotal evidence is that the TA has not been sufficiently responsive to this shift. I recently had to use the downtown Lex to go downtown. I got to Grand Central at 5:05 pm. I remember what 5:05 pm at Grand Central used to be. A waiting downtown express was virtually empty. I returned from Bowling Green around 7pm. The train and platforms were packed. There were no system delays. It was simply a case of inadequate service for the demand. I would not use the crowded off-peak experience to justify building a Second Ave subway down to Water St. Rather, I would use it to ask some hard questions to NYCT's schedule makers. |

You cannot add outerborough branches without a Manhattan trunk.Extending the SAS from 96th to 125th will not add any trunk capacity. My proposal to expand outer borough service to areas not currently served would use a repurposed Atlantic Ave Line that would connect into the Montague St tunnel. This tunnel and the Broadway and Nassau St subways to which the tunnel connects are under utilized. |

Of course.The fact that the 60th street tunnel had damage and the 63rd street tunnel did not strongly indicates that the reason 63rd street tunnel was not damaged was not that the storm surge didn't go that far north, but some other reason. The point being addressed was whether or not the extent of the storm surge was the reason. A possible other reason very well might be that its tunnel entrances are higher or were better protected. The post being replied to didn't bring those issues up. |

IDK, but Roosevelt Island flooded, and the 60th Street Tunnel Entrance and the QB 21st station are about the same distance apart from the River...I would imagine QB 21st and Roosevelt Island Station would be the most vulnerable points to flooding, not to mention emergency exits. I would think the tunnel having an modern design has a lot do to with it suffering no major damage during Sandy, I mean EVERY rail tunnel south of there suffered damage cause of that storm. I don't think its a coincidence that the most modern one didn't suffer any major damage. |

There was no Sandy flooding in the 60th St or 63rd St tunnels but there was damage to other equipment knocking those two out. The 53rd St tubes had about 4 feet of water, Greenpoint was filled up to the ceiling. South of 53rd everything got flooded except Joralemon. |

I think Citi Bike was losing money even before this winter's harsh weather. The issue was that the investors thought there would be many more daily or weekly riders (where the most profit is made) than yearly riders (who pay once for unlimited use, like I do). What happened is that many many more people signed up for the yearly (unlimited) membership and there were far fewer occasional riders than expected. The "reward" for the yearly riders in 2015 is a stuff increase in the membership fee - from about $100 to %150, I think. Nevertheless, I'm still renewing my membership.--Mark |

We spend as much as the ten countries with the highest military spending combined and 8 of those countries are allies. We can easily stand to rein in the DoD's budget and still have plenty to defend our interests. But Congress uses our defense spending as a jobs program for a few states funded by other states, rendered sacrosanct due to patriotic fervor. We're never going to balance the budget so long as we allow that to continue. |

But the F-35s aren't really going to replace the F-15s, especially the F-15E Strike Eagles. The F-22 was slated to replace the F-15, but we ordered far too few of them. LockMart has made noises about both Eagle variants being replaced by the F-35, but the USAF has been less than enthusiastic about giving up the range, payload, and sensor systems of the older fighters (the podded system on the Strike Eagle may be superior to the JSF's fixed system). At this point a penetration light/medium strike aircraft to replace the Strike Eagle is more likely to be a UCAV similar to the X-47B than a manned variant of the F-35 or F-22.The F-15s are still a world class fighter. The SU-27 and its variants may be able to go toe to toe with the Eagle in an even fight, but it's rare that we do that. The USAF's use of sensor fusion throughout all their platforms means it's unlikely we'll fight them on an even footing. IMHO it's too bad that back in the 1980s we opted to build the F-117 and B-2. The latter was too small and the former was too large/expensive. If we'd gone with something like the Senior Trend, or something around the size of the F-111/F-15E, it probably would have been easier to field a larger force of aircraft more useful to the wars we now find ourselves fighting. Heck, the A-12 Avenger proposed for the Navy probably would have made for an ideal Joint Strike aircraft. |

IMO a full length 2nd Avenue subway is neccessary for continued growth of NYC. Not completing it was one of the biggest mistakes the city has ever made. Lets not forget that there were two els running the length of Manhattan on the east side & streched to the Bronx that were ripped down & replaced with busses.Oh yeah, making all the Avenues one way sure helped the busses move faster. So were forced to live with an overcrowded Lex Ave Line. If back then we had a Mayor who had the balls or integrity to stand up to Moses & the real estate intrests in the 1950s and cared about rapid transit needs, he'd have said that the 3d Ave El stays up until a subway is built to replace it. If that happened, we'd have a 2nd ave subway up & running a long time ago. But that was not to be. Now were going to have LIRR commuters comming into GCT. If a full length 4 track 2nd Ave Subway existed, any excess crowding could be easily absorbed. Thats were the prioritiy should have been then & should be now. |
