The location is very important. It has to be accessible to many subway lines and commuter rails. Moving it to another location could be devastating. Especially now that it competes with four other major venues(Nassau, Barclays, Prudential, and IZOD). Keep in mind, previous MSG's didn't compete with other venues. Neither did the current one when it was built. But slowly competition crept up. I see the current location as being very important. |

I browsed though the reviews of the station on Yelp, and most common complaint seems to be them announcing the track a train will depart from only like 10 minutes before it departs, which wouldn't change if the old station was rebuilt as that as an dispatching issue.http://www.yelp.com/biz/new-york-penn-station-new-york One lady even gave NYP a five star rating on there. |

Posted by Outside the Box on Tue Jan 13 16:51:58 2015, in response to Re: Madison Cylindrical Garden, posted by FtGreeneG on Tue Jan 13 13:37:28 2015. Replace the MSG roof with a lightweight air supported roof. Take the weight savings and raise MSG.Take a look at the current MSG roof. MSG Roof http://www.newsteelconstruction.com/wp/40-year-ago-americas-largest-cable-suspension-roof-madison-square-gardens-new-york-city/ Its a combination outer perimeter compression ring and inner tension ring system. Cables connect perpendicularly from the perimeter ring to the inner ring. Concrete slabs run between the outer and inner ring in between the cables. All this support the suspended scoreboard and the mechanical systems high above the arena floor. Needless to say, it is heavy. Move the mechanical systems to the perimeter. Seal the building. Retain the cables and rings as backup for inflatable roof. A new larger scoreboard may hang from the ring. Take the rest of the weight savings and raise the MSG building 1 story (~14ft). Modify the Forum Lobby (Theater at MSG lobby). Demolish the ticket offices along the west wall on the Amtrak Concourse level, and link with lower level. That will give Penn Station a perimeter ground floor glass wall for daylight, and better street level pedestrian access. It would give NY Penn a nice 2 story glass wall and column entrance at 8th Ave. Inside, there may be a 3 story atrium near the 8th Ave end, with a high ceiling, and a cutout with escalators and elevators to the Exit Concourse. It would also give MSG a pedestal, and ramps or lifts would give trucks and vans to access MSG loading bay. Its not quite GCT atrium or even the Woods Bagot NY Penn alternate proposal (http://www.woodsbagot.com/news/reimagining-the-garden), but nobody would need to move, and you don't even need to find a replacement space for the Theater at MSG. |

Outdated? They just replaced most of the interior to modern NBA/NHL standards. Everything is brand new. The ceiling is iconic. Replacing that design would be stupid. It was discussed and MSG officials wisely kept it. The round venue is fine. Most people don't even fucking see it. They crawl out of Penn Station or some parking lot and go right into the arena for the event. And they're in a bigger hurry to leave. What should they do? Replace with a big box like Staples Center? |

They had a staff of "Gatemen" (officially ushers) that kept those heavy Iron gates closed before boarding time. The train departure tracks were well posted in advance, for every train had an assigned track. This (in theory)was to keep the crowds on the main concourse instead of gathering on the platform. This was to allow passengers coming into GCT to de-train without platform congestion & be directed (ushered) to the nearest open gate.. In addition the heat on the platforms a few cars up often went as high as 130 degrees. Often folks would go around a closed gate, walk down the platform in that heat (summertime), have the train equiptment arrive late & often fall out from the heat. And if they didn'go down, they'd miss their train if there was a last minute track change. I wonder if the old Penn Sta had a similar gate system |

The Yankees are the most successful franchise in history. They went through some rough years. And they host baseball 90% of the time. There are occasional concerts and now soccer. MSG draws a lot of family shows which are important. If MSG moves a few blocs away and people have to walk to take the subway, it's easier to see hockey or a family show or WWE when it's on LI or NJ. |
