Pretty soon someone will come up with a separate name for each of the spans.

No ... what will happen is each span will be put up for sponsorship. Eventually it might be "The Hamilton Fish Newburgh Beacon Bridge Eastbound Span Sponsored By Healy Chevrolet".

Jersey barriers were installed so that cars going out of control would not cross into oncoming traffic, and some work was done on the s curves, but you're pretty much locked in by the cemeteries and park. Still quite a few accidents, but way less deaths.

It was named Queensborough Bridge from opening. The name Blackwell's Island bridge was not used except during planning and the renaming of the island didn't happen until over 10 years after the bridge opened.

is only the portion of the Miller Highway between 57th and 72nd Streets.

I remember when it was still standing and no one called it the Edward Miller Highway. It was always the West Side Drive. Poor Mr Miller is better known for his beer.

Putting the image of rulers on coinage has a very long tradition.

Exactly. You went straight to my point. Until 1909 we only put allegorical images of Liberty on our coinage, except for occasional representation of people such as Indians, but they didn't represent actual people.

I know it sounds worse than corny now, but the President is really supposed to be the First Citizen. He and his family have all the trappings of the Sun King. I'm it didn't start with Obama. It probably really got going with the security after Kennedy was assassinated, and accelerated after the attempt on Reagan.

It wasn't in keeping with my prejudice against naming things for politicians. If RR was named back to National Airport and a couple of airports were named back to Idlewild and North Beach, I wouldn't bat an eyelash; in fact, there's something appealing about it.

Actually I used to refer to it as the Miller Elevated Highway if I mentioned it in writing.

One bridge named for a person that I wouldn't want to see changed is Outerbridge, just because it's such a great of source of trivia, better than asking someone to pronounce Houston Street as a New York test.
