You are still think short term. A more direct route will be just as much quicker the day it opens as it will be 100 or more years from now. The amount of time and fuel saved compared the Selkirk Bridge route will be the long term payoff. CSX, NY & Atlantic, and P&W would provide the diesel electrics. |

So I've read the whole thread stemming from your suggestion. I agree that, at least for now, assembling an all Long Island train on the Jersey side and running it non-stop (no cars being taken off/added on) to Long Island during the night would be an excellent solution. What needs to be found out first is exactly how long that would actually take (I believe it has to change ends twice, no? Once at Port Morris and again at Fresh Pond). Could it be done in a window of, say, 8PM-4:30AM? How many trucks that originate in NJ are actually destined for Long Island? How many single stack trains does that warrant? I can understand the need for building the tunnel if you've got enough freight to warrant several trains a day, but you can make a significant impact with 1 or 2 a day, then I don't really see the money for it being justified.Hell, if it needs to be, run a train direct from NJ, no stop in Selkirk, that is headed for both Hunts Point and LI. Split the train while changing ends at Port Morris. Would that be possible? |

If its Light Rail then they won't be able to run freights at the same time cause of the FRA. I can't see a commuter rail being successful on this line in modern times so its either subway or LR. |

Are you sure about that? Looking at Google Maps, it looks plenty wide to me, if they clear away some of the vegetation. Stations and such are another matter, that will almost certainly require land acquisition. |
