Forty five years ago today the Chrystie Street Subway opened for service effectively merging the BMT and IND Divisions. For a generation of railfans the subways would never be the same. Below is the excerpt form "The Book of First and Last Runs."

November 25-26, 1967 – This was the weekend that saw the opening of the Chrystie Street Line and the Grand Street Station. The last “QT” Broadway-Brighton Local via Tunnel (BMT Rt. 1), left from Coney Island at 11:59 PM, November 25 en-route to Ditmars Boulevard, Astoria. It left Astoria at 1:32 AM, November 26. The consist was (N) 3580-1,3690-1,3799-8,3857-6.
The last “D” Concourse-6th Avenue-Culver Express left from Coney Island at 12:03 AM, November 26. The consist was (N) R-4 524,823, R-1 283, R-4 681,551,417, R-6 958, R-4 629,817, 633.
The first “D” Concourse-6th Avenue-Brighton Express left from Coney Island at 12:10 AM . This would be the first train to operate through the new Chrystie Street Tunnel. The consist was (N) R-32A 3380-1,3522-3,3576-7,3642-3. It met the first southbound “D” Concourse-6th Avenue-Brighton Express at Broadway-Lafayette Street. The consist of the southbound train was (S) R-4 794, R-6 1010,1006, R-4 796, R-6 996, R-1 137, 249, R-4 806, R-1 141, R-4 677.

I didn't know that the D used 8 cars at first. I only remember it running 10 cars, post-Chrystie. Albeit, I didn't ride every day, mainly if Mom wanted to shop at Gimbels or Macy's at Herald Square (since the 6th Av and Broadway Lines meet at Herald Square, for this trip, we weren't really affected by Chrystie, still a one-seat ride (unless we rode the B47 the one stop to Empire/Flatbush (more like Washington/Flatbush, where the B47 (and B48) fumigated, then went around the block (Washington/Lincoln Rd/Flatbush/Empire) to the layover zone). Only difference was the platform. At least post-Chrystie, we wouldn't get into the situation where, during a period of missing Qs, pre-Chrystie, I attempted to show my vast knowledge of the subway system at 8 years old, and announced that we could take the N and change to the Q (or QT) at Dekalb. I think you see where this is going, we of course sailed by Dekalb and ended up at Pacific St! Not to worry, I said, we'll get the next train back to Dekalb and cross over. Well, the next train was a T, so we again sailed by Dekalb, back over the bridge and into Canal. Crossed over, and my mother said in no uncertain terms, we will board the Q and THE Q ONLY!! LOL

Didn't occure to me to take the RR back to Dekalb, but even back then, I was an expressophile. :)

Post-Chrystie, the highlight for me was getting my first subway map with all the new routes in the pretty colors. I think we had just gotten off a B41 at Empire/Flatbush, and I beg my mom to let me run down to the token booth and see if they had the new map. They did! I think I stared at it for hours :)

Loved the 60s TA logo on the cover. Before the Ronan/MTA "M" (ugh)

Weekend Ds used 8 cars for quite a while but M-F Ds used the full 10 cars. B trains used 8 cars for several years since West End platforms were not lengthened for several years after Chrystie opened. Even after that, B, N, and RR trains remained 8 cars for several years even after BMT Bway and 4 Av stations were extended to 10 cars which took place in 1969/70.

I was just boasting a bit...but not at anyone else's expense. Kind of like owning a '65 Mustang from brand-new.

The B, R and Q were using 8 cars as late as 1987. Only the Manhattan Bridge closures and the subsequent loss of capacity to midtown made all non-ED BMT lines go full 600'.

I also like that map and still have my original copy. But I did like the previous map with color pictures of the subway cars.

I remember there being some serious backups on the D-express between Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach in the afternoon rush outbound. Around December, 1967, I watched the backup from the walkway on the bridge over the Belt Parkway.

Also remember some backups between Church Avenue and Prospect Park-inbound on the few mornings that I got to ride the D-express.

Ah, the subway memories.

The reason for the S/B backups was that when Chrystie was first implemented QJs terminated at BBC and Ds went through to Stl requiring both services to Xover N/O BBC. Apparently the so called TA planners forgot that the IRT West Side services were realigned in 1959 to eliminate just that problem N/O 96 St. The following pick, the services were adjusted so that QJs went through to Stl and Ds terminated at BBC while operating as Brighton expresses and went through to Stl only when operating as lcls.

The D only used eight car trains during the night of the changeover November 25-26. As eight car "QT" trains arrived at Coney Island they were re-signed as "D". Similarly as ten car "D" Culver trains arrived at Coney Island they were re-signed as "F".

By the following Monday morning all the "D"s were up to full strength.

I hope that you said "thank you Mom."

There are some great moms out there. Later that day 11/26/67)I was riding the "D" across the Manhattan Bridge at the front window. A women got on the train with her son who was about eight. He wanted to look out the front window but was hesitant to do so because I was there. I was glad to step back and give the little guy the front spot as I could easily see over him. I asked his mother if he knew that he was going through the brand new subway which hadn't been open even 24 hours yet. She didn't know about the opening but her son enjoyed riding the trains and so she had taken him for an outing. Once he found out that he was going through the brand new tunnel he was on Cloud 9. I wonder what ever happened to that little guy?

I vividly remember standing on the Manhattan-bound platform at 63 Drive (GG,RR) that first day watching train after train of the oldest R1/9 F's I had ever seen racing towards Jamaica, with their 3-digit car numbers and filthy windows. Prior to then, Queens Boulevard had only the newer R1/9s, which seemed brighter and cleaner. The car population at Jamaica Yard was radically changed.

A color picture of R-36 World's Fair paint with Shea Stadium in the back.

Color of R-32 on Sea Beach.

Color of R-38.

Also an artist's design of the "futuristic" R-40 slant.

When the N was first routed to CTl, it used whatever Jamaica Yd supplied which included R-32s, 46s and even 44s. All N consists were 8 cars regardless of the car type. Initially, all Canal and Whitehall dropouts were required to be 8 X 60 foot cars due to the signal configuration at Canal St requiring PM Whl put ins to change ends in the middle track. Once a reverse home signal was installed on the S/B lcl track N/O Canal, Whl put ins could enter the lcl tk in Canal station and change ends there to go to Whl.

Well, I miss my one-seat ride from Metropolitan Avenue to Broad Street.

My bus line in Queens, the Q38, stops at both Woodhaven Boulevard and Metropolitan Avenue. A friend's college-age son asked his father, "Why should I ride an hour on the M train to get to the Queens Center Mall (at Woodhaven Boulevard) when I can get there in 15 minutes on the bus?"

I have come to call the M "The Great Circle to Nowhere."

Actually, prior to the arrival of the R-38s, Qns Blvd had R-1s in the 300 series and R-4s in the 400 thru 700 series. The remaining R-1s, 4s, and 6s were in Wash Hts and the Concourse. The remaining R-7s through 9s except for the 1400s which were in Wash Hts and Concourse were assigned to Queens with the exception of R-7A 1575 which was assigned to Wash Hts and almost exclusively found on the AA/BB.

Wasn't the construction of this tunnel part of the Chrystie project as well?

It was. The connection between Essex Street (BMT) and Broadway-Lafayette Street (IND) did not open until July 1968.

Mr Edwards: You sound like a good solid BMT man to be asking about the R-27/30's. The car assignment plan after Chrystie Street initially called for R-27/30's on the N,NX, QB,QJ,RJ and RR.

They were also assigned to the weekend and night time "JJ" between 168 Street and Broad Street.

This car plan was not followed religiously for very long. In the days after Chrystie Street it seemed that you could rice any piece of equipment on nearly any line. About the only thing that you were sure of was catch a Q-Type on the Myrtle Avenue El south of Broadway.

Quite a few more people right "the great circle to nowhere" now than they did when it just went down Nassau St.

which, judging how popular the line is from day one, should have let the MTA KNOW that the cries from Eastern Division riders FOR THE RESTORATION WAS JUSTIFIED.

they are such idiots.

I remember the arrival of the R38s in the summer of 1966, but I don't recall any old 3-digit arnine cars on Queens Blvd prior to Chrystie in 1967. The only time we saw them before then was when we took the D at 7 Av or the CC at 42 St. Their arnines were old!

As soon as the N replaced the EE as the Queens Blvd local, I saw R16 N trains (and was shocked and disappointed to see them!).

So the D only used R1/9..32'S?

The QT used both 27/30s and 32..so did the 27's drop out at Stillwell to become QB/QJ the following weekday, with 32a becoming D trains?

I know about the JJ's..they basically used 6 car QJ trains during the late evenings nights weekends.
during the weekdays, they used R16..and the influx of pre war R units from Jamaica that were being swapped out for the 16s for EE and RR service.
i only got to ride the Myrtle El below Broadway ONCE...
