Uhm, again. It's known fact that the subway WAS constructed from Rockaway Ave to at least Euclid. The station shells at the four stations east of Bway Junction were all constructed, as well as the entire station at Bway Junction (Bway East New York). The finishing work was not done on any of those stations aside from Bway Junction, and of course the tracks and signals were not installed because of the lack of metal and construction stopping for WWII.

I remember them well, especially the large pimping station at Atlantic and Conduit. I live two blocks from where the tubes were here in Nassau, right next to the Long Island Rail Road. Unfortunately, they recently tore down the beautiful large brick pumping station in Freeport, which was supposed to have been converted into an apartment house. However, the private owner never maintained the structure, it fell into a state of serious disrepair, and it was destroyed.

I-78 was supposed to run from the WillyB down between Broadway and Bushwick Av. and then along either Fulton or Atlantic and then down the Conduit median to connect to the current Nassau Expwy, which later became NYS-878. As it was built, the Queens portion is wide enough but the Brooklyn portion is much narrower, as if the plans had been abandoned by the time it was built.

Just where is the water pipe located?
Is it under the North Conduit roadway? As it is a raised roadway, that is where I suspect it is.
The grassy mall between the westbound Belt and the North Conduit is wide enough for a two track ROW.
I had always hoped for a LIRR EXPRESS ROUTE to Brooklyn, avoiding Jamaica.
I believe the water table would make for a difficult subway along that stretch.

The Bushwick Expressway would have run further north than Bushwick Avenue. That was called the "Middle Route" and was recommended by the planners as opposed to the South Route you describe and North Route. See nycroads.com.

How do you figure? The BQE and LIE don't connect to I-87 either. and the Van Wyck doesn't connect to I-80 and on top of everything is a spur so should have an odd number.

I-278 was originally intended to start on I-287 and end on I-95, and cross I-78 again in Williamsburg. I-495 originally extended from Secaucus (on I-95) to the Clearview Expressway (then I-78), while the Van Wyck runs from I-78 at the Bruckner Interchange (now I-295) to I-78 at the Nassau Expressway (now I-878 and NY-878).

Yes, copyright checks. Most of them are quite obvious if you're familiar with the area of the map. While obtaining my Masters in Geography at Hunter College back in the late 90's, I had taken a course in GIS Law, and one case under discussion was later resolved with the judgment that a map is a "compilation of facts". This meant that you could copyright your map design, but not the information itself. Therefore it is no longer necessary to use copyright checks.

The Interstate Highway numbering system is a pretty good example of a good idea that gets screwed up by both politicians and poor planning. A good example is the relatively new I-99 in Pennsylvania - in real terms, it SHOULD be a 3 digit spur route - say, 376 or 576; but the local politicos wanted a two digit number because it looks 'better'. It now sticks totally out or 'sequence' of the rest of the eastern Interstate System. Same thing with the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike - its numbered 476 - but they sort of 'get away' with that one, as it continues south as a western belt of Philly...

This is true. There was a case involving a telephone directory, where the defendant company used a published phone book as their case but checked the accuracy of each entry before publication. They won the infringement suit.

However ... If you are copying "facts" you are safe, but if you copy someone's intentional lie (e.g., a non-existent made-up street) you are not copying a fact, you are copying "art," or "creative content" which is the subject of copyright. So you are not absolutely safe by copying what you think are facts from a published map, and not independently checking them.
