The Interstate Highway numbering system is a pretty good example of a good idea that gets screwed up by both politicians and poor planning. A good example is the relatively new I-99 in Pennsylvania - in real terms, it SHOULD be a 3 digit spur route - say, 376 or 576; but the local politicos wanted a two digit number because it looks 'better'. It now sticks totally out or 'sequence' of the rest of the eastern Interstate System. Same thing with the NE Extension of the PA Turnpike - its numbered 476 - but they sort of 'get away' with that one, as it continues south as a western belt of Philly... |
