Yes, those borrowed cars had GG signs spliced in as well as the correct destination signs. I'll bet the conductors enjoyed not having to assume the position, but rather work the levers in the cabs.

I still wonder how the doors on the R-10s responded to the lever controls on the R-16s. Since the levers had open, close and lock positions, they came closest to mimicking the trigger boxes.

IIRC not that many got repainted. The only ones I ever saw were in one of the yards; I never rode on one myself.

I loved the R-1/9s and didn't care for the BMT standards. I'd gotten used to the front end route and destination signs by the time I first saw the standards and felt it was a step backwards (which it was, since the standards were older).

I rode on them during the Parade of Trains for the first time after 33 years and loved every second. Their gears hit a jaw-dropping B above middle C on one of the n/b Brighton express runs - that train was MOVING!!! I also rode on them on the 27th, 28th and 29th during the centennial celebration. By the time I got to LGA for my flight home on the 29th, they were boarding the plane.

not so..as long as they were in Jamaica yard,they would be used in any service operated along QB.
R7/9 were still in F service by 1976..though used as rush hours fillers.

I did a "ride every line at least once" fan trip in August 1976, shortly before I moved to L. A., and I'm fairly sure I got Arnines on the GG (I definitely did on the LL and the K). Alas, in those pre-SubChat/SubTalk days, I wasn't into recording consists (I didn't know many of the R-numbers back then!). If I can every get back to NYC and have a spare day, I'm going to do an update ride.

The original 1400s group that went East had the Eastern signs all right, but retained their wicker and in some cases red leatherette seats, as well as their marine green interior paint. And in a couple of cases, 1400s got the blue-and-grey exterior/pistachio green interiors.

It probably wasn't too bad since i recall seeing mixed trains of R-10s and 16s at the time. I often saw trains of 8 R-16s and 2 R-10s probably a result of mismating when trains were added back up from 8 cars to 10.

They had a few on the F deliberately so as to cycle them off to scrap in CI. I am surprised the last BMT one was a J not an M.

The last Standard went out of service in 1969. I never had the chance to ride one.

In the mid '70s, there was a mix of cars on the F. You could get an Arnine or an R-38. R-46's were sprinkled in. I probably last rode an Arnine on the F about 1975 or 1976.

those were the best times..you never knew what you would get..
on the F,it could be anything from a R7/9,38,40S,40M,42,44..later the 46's showed up..
my favorite was the very first car I ever rode..the R10,back then..usually on its mainstay[the A line] or CC.

IIRC it was when they attempted to tack R-10s onto trains of later cars that door response became an issue. Something about the doors on the R-10s opening a few seconds after those on newer cars?

I didn't ride on them after 1971 - mainly because my subway riding in general had dropped off substantially. I didn't set foot on the subway at all in 1974 and 1975.

I rode on them for two years on the Larry. They labored going uphill in the 14th St. tunnel - the motorman would wrap the controller before bottoming out in order to build up a head of steam. The gear pitch would rise as high as G# above middle C, then slowly start to drop on the uphill climb. It got lower and lower, as low as B below middle C, just as we reached Bedford Ave. The tunnel levels out sooner at the Manhattan end and you could actually hear the train pick up a bit of speed as we'd enter First Ave.

The other thing I remember about the BMT standards was the distinct, "tchhhhhh" sound they emitted as they came to a full stop.

My first IND ride was on a prewar D or F from 34th to 47-50th on April 30, 1967. Then we took a prewar D all the way to Stillwell Ave. - back when it still ran on the Culver.

The following Sunday I rode on the 8th Ave. line for the first time - on a three-car AA from PABT to 81st St. I also witnessed an R-10 Abbott ripping past on the n/b express track, a thundering blur of teal and white.

I remember the groan they made as they pulled away from a station. I mostly rode them on the LL in the later years, but also remember them on the Brighton local, Sea Beach & West End express, and the Franklin Shuttle. What I never knew until I started reading the interwebs was that both the shuttle and the Canarsie line had experimental cars on them BEFORE they were replaced by standards, cars that I never rode. And also on the shuttle were the R34, cars that I did get to ride, but this was after the standards.

I rmember the R16s just being crappy cars, uncomfortable to sit in, jerky acceleration, jerky braking and doors that didn't work. They were on the QJ occasionally, or maybe more than just occasionally.

Back in 1965 I had doctor appoitments at Rego Park and took the GG or BMT from QP to 63rd drive. Rush hour at Queens Plaza was a R1/9 festival on the Express tracks; one E or F after another, every 2-3 mins.

Occasionally..?

They were assigned there until 68/69,afterwards moved over to the Jamaica yard and Coney Island for service on the EE/GG/RR.

The 16's returned to the Eastern Division in 1977-78 due to several reasons.
the placing of all SMEE equipment on the M line,which forced the equipment operating on the M[R7/9] to be moved TOTALLY to the J/L/k in 1973[mostly K and L service back then..]due to CI SHOPS not wanting to deal with the old stuff.
the removal of the R7/9 cars from service in 77..already had R27 in L service..along with borrowed equipment from 207st[R10'S]

I remember them all too well during my commuting days of 1972-1974 in Queens IND. My favourite sound was that little "pshht" that came out from under one of the seats when the doors closed. I think that was a load sensing valve (correct me if I've misnamed it). The fans (and the musty smell of the fan oil), the groaning of the bull gears, the clanking of the brake handles, yes, I both loved and hated the Oldtimers. They were better off in the winter, since by the end of their service lives, the heat often would not shut off. And one more thing - the speed, especially the GE-motored R-6-2. Those cars could FLY, given the right combination of driver and signal. Even to THIS DAY, they attain impressive speed, especially in 53rd Street tube. #401 got us under river in about 2:50; not too shabby.

I can remember riding an R16 on the F about 1971. The brakes must have been lousy. The lead car missed the end of the platform at Queens Plaza.I never saw one again on the F. The Arnines were great in the winter. The seats had the best heating, especially by the windows.

They DID replace the door motors (and re-did the pockets with those slanted ones) somewhere in the 70s. And they got repainted in the silver and blue scheme. One glaring problem was the interior ceilings. The white enamel they used did not properly adhere to the original surface, and it would up peeling and flaking off. I remember seeing the same issue with #6387 at the Transit museum some years back - but it has since been rectified after the original blue interior was restored. The solution? PRIMER.

Actually the speed was great. CPW was real nice. The sound was great and the storm door was also great for railfanning. The conductor platforms sucked. I know of someone who was a motorman (old school TO) that was running a D Triplex and his conductor slipped and crawled under the Newkirk Ave. station. The conductor took a cab to Church Ave. to open the doors. I know this wasn't an arnine. but the platforms and door system was similar.

As I understand it 1689 was in that set & bound for scrap.
It was bought from the scrapper.

Mid 1950s on the A. When the R-16s went to the GG they didn't go anywhere near Rockaway.

Yes. Most people actually still referred to them by the old R-11 contract number even after the rebuild.

By the time the last R-9s ran on the BMT, the M was running to CI via the Brighton and the TA wanted to keep the R-9s off that line as much as possible.
