I rode on them for two years on the Larry. They labored going uphill in the 14th St. tunnel - the motorman would wrap the controller before bottoming out in order to build up a head of steam. The gear pitch would rise as high as G# above middle C, then slowly start to drop on the uphill climb. It got lower and lower, as low as B below middle C, just as we reached Bedford Ave. The tunnel levels out sooner at the Manhattan end and you could actually hear the train pick up a bit of speed as we'd enter First Ave.The other thing I remember about the BMT standards was the distinct, "tchhhhhh" sound they emitted as they came to a full stop. |
