The vast majority of Stuyvesant's Asian students are foreign born or first generation American. Indeed, Ms. Miller the lonely black at Stuyvesant, is also an immigrant.
I've believe that immigrants' children are exposed to a greater desire for academic success than children who can trace their American roots back several generations.
I attribute some of this to the American pop culture that aspires to the lowest common denominator rather than the greatest common denominator. Acquiring knowledge can be entertaining. However, all one sees on television are gun battles, inane reality shows and car chases. They are easier to create than dialogue.
